You woke up to the sound of birds chirping and voices of men in the distance. This was your first day at Camp Toccoa, Georgia. You were the only female officer in the entire 101st Airborne.

"No pressure." You thought to yourself as you sat up in your bunk. "Leading a company of men, how hard could it be?"

Your sarcasm was a virtue.

You slicked your hair back into a bun, and put on your PT uniform making your way out of your tent. Easy Company was already in formation. You made your way over to the men.

"You're late." You turned to see Captain Herbert Sobel. You had met Sobel the previous day. You didn't think much of him from your initial meeting, but you wanted to give him a fair shot and see his leadership style for yourself.

"Training starts at 0700 sir." You said checking your wrist watch.

"It's 0701 Sergeant. Best not start bad habits on your first day." Sobel said staring you down.

"What a joker." You thought to yourself as you stood in formation alongside Lt. Winters who you had not yet met.

You could see the men gazing at you from the corner of your eye.

"Easy Company let me introduce you to our new Staff Sergeant, Sergeant (L/n). She will be leading along with Lieutenant Winters on our evening march tonight." Sobel addressed. "We'll see how she keeps up." He then said under his breath.

"Well I think I'll keep up just fine captain." You said standing at attention, causing the men to giggle. Winters grinned, you side eyed him and smirked. You couldn't help but notice how handsome and fit he was. You stopped yourself from thinking any further, you couldn't possibly ponder the idea of fancying one of your superiors.

Sobel stared at you as if to pull an infraction out of his ass. "We're running Currahee! 3 miles up, 3 miles down!"

"Sir, Yes sir!" The men yelled as they fell out.

You ran next to Winters.

"Is Currahee as bad as they tell me Lt. Winters?"

He turned to you. "Well I suppose that depends on your physical condition. Don't worry you'll do fine. The first mile up is always the hardest."

You prided yourself in the way you took care of your body. You trained hard to be here and it paid off. You perfected your mile at 5 minutes and 20 seconds, your own personal record, and you were proud to say you were in the best shape of your life. You would have to be for the days ahead...

"Well that should be no problem then." You said as you gained momentum passing up Winters.

He looked at you both curiously and admirably.

You couldn't help but feel the mens eyes on you as you ran amongst them. You knew this would be the reaction to a woman in the Army, you just hoped to gain their respect.
