Jenna's eyes widened with surprise as she discovered the breakfast tray accompanied by a teddy bear, the note held delicately in its little paws. Her heart skipped a beat as she read the words on the note, her fingers trembling slightly.

"A little friend to keep you company when I'm not around - Emma."

With a mix of gratitude and wistfulness, Jenna noticed that the breakfast tray also contained a small package of chocolates and a container of sweet potato and cabbage, the peculiar yet beloved food combination she had once passionately shared with Emma. It touched her deeply to realize that Emma had paid attention to the little details she had shared with her.

Jenna's gaze shifted from the note in her hands to the now empty room opposite hers. The room, once filled with Emma's presence, now stood vacant and silent. A pang of longing tugged at her heart as she recalled the days when Emma had been just a glass barrier away.

Jenna stared into the empty room as if hoping to catch a glimpse of the past. But all she saw was the reflection of her own longing eyes.

Jenna had grown accustomed to their nightly conversations and the comfort they found in each other's presence.

Jenna quickly grabbed her phone and typed out a text to Emma.

"Thank you for the breakfast and the teddy bear, Emma. It means a lot to me. But I wish you had said goodbye before leaving!"

"Anyway, have a nice day! You're finally free from the terrible food here <3"

After an hour, a message from Emma appeared on her phone screen.

"You were sleeping. And there's no need to say goodbye because I'll be back later."

"To visit you. Not as a patient."

"I can't miss our nightly stargazing adventures."

As Emma carried on with her day, her mind occasionally wandered back to the unanswered text she sent Jenna.

Curiosity tugged at her, but she pushed it aside, reminding herself that she would find out later when she visited Jenna in the evening. For now, she had tasks to attend to responsibilities that awaited her after her absence from home.

Upon entering her empty house, Emma was greeted by a layer of dust that had settled during her time at the hospital. She sighed, realizing the need to clean and restore her living space to its former order.

Growing up in the foster care system, Emma had moved from one home to another, never truly finding a place to call her own. Never truly finding someone to call her family. That's how she learned to be self-reliant, to fend for herself, and to navigate the world independently. Her introverted nature and the challenges she had faced had also made it difficult for her to form connections with others. She had grown accustomed to being alone because that's all she's ever known.

But in her self-reliance, the emptiness of her surroundings mirrored the emptiness she felt within.

Emma's footsteps echoed through the sterile corridors as she navigated her way to Jenna's room. However, as she approached the familiar space, her heart sank at the sight of an empty bed. With confusion and worry etched across her face, she sought answers from the nurse stationed nearby.

"Excuse me, where is Jenna?" Emma asked, her voice tinged with concern.

The nurse's eyes softened, recognizing Emma's familiarity with Jenna. With a gentle voice, she delivered the news that sent a shiver down Emma's spine.

"Jenna Ortega has been transferred to the ICU," the nurse replied, her tone filled with a mix of sympathy and caution.

Emma's breath caught in her throat as she processed the gravity of the situation. The ICU, a place reserved for the most critical patients, signaled a sudden and alarming deterioration in Jenna's condition.

Determined to see Jenna, Emma followed the nurse's directions to the ICU. As she approached the glass barrier that separated them, her heart raced with a mixture of anticipation and anxiety. Peering through the transparent barrier, she caught a glimpse of the scene unfolding within.

Doctors and nurses scurried about, their movements precise and deliberate. Clad in full-body PPE, they shielded themselves from an unseen threat. The sight sent a chill down Emma's spine, a stark reminder of the contagious and dangerous nature of Jenna's illness.

The gravity of the situation washed over Emma, tears welling up in her eyes. She longed to hold Jenna's hand, to offer comfort and reassurance in the face of such uncertainty. But all she could do was press her hand against the cold glass.
