“I am afraid I have some bad news for you, Miss Mabuyakhulu.” Doctor Mniki announces, standing at the edge of my small hospital bed.

After my presentation, my knight in shining armour brought me to Melomed Hospital where I was taken to x-ray in order to examine my ankle while being given pain meds to dull the ache. Mbulelo actually settled the costs in advance. I do have a medical plan that I took out because if you’re independent, you never know when a tragedy might strike. But now since Mbulelo paid for me, I am indebted to him and I have to pay him back as soon as I can because I hate debts. Fortunately, I have his number, so I will pay him back as soon as I can.

“Let’s hear it, doctor.”

He goes on to explain how bad the damage is on my ankle and how they have to put on some metal to make sure whatever that shifted down there goes back to normal. I have to wear a cast for two weeks after my surgery and walk with crutches for maybe 6 to 8 weeks. Wow, that’s a lot for someone who is always busy like me.

“So when will I be able to get back to normal?” I ask and he sighs.

“It is hard say but injuries like these take time to heal, Miss Mabuyakhulu. I had a patient in May who had the same type of injury. It took her months to finally get back to a standardized normal but even today, she still comes in crying about pain. So I would say you shouldn’t rush the healing process. Take it easy. Shy away from things that require you to stand long hours of the day. Yes, we do profit from you consulting from time to time but your recovery is of utmost importance to us. So please, and I will emphasize this after the surgery, take it easy.”

I exhale loudly and lean back on this single bed. “Fine. I will do as you say. Now, when is the surgery?”

“I have scheduled it for tomorrow evening. Meaning you are required to eat nothing from the morning until the time of your surgery. Another doctor will come in and prep you before you go under. Take it easy and don’t stress yourself about it.” He leaves after assuring me for the hundredth time and I take out my phone to let my staff know about my condition.

A few hours later, my staff crowds my ward with different types of foods and flowers and balloons. The drama these people have. A day hasn’t passed since I got admitted and already they are making a big deal of it. Note to men, women always have spare money for emergencies. Nqobile Msibi, who is my vice, fixes my pillow and then sits on the chair near the bed. She stares at my ankle which is elevated by pillows and then looks at me.

“What’s the diagnosis?” she asks and I sigh.
“The ankle was damaged badly. A few bones broken. So there is some metal that they must insert which will help speed the process of my bones reforming. I have surgery tomorrow and it will take a long time before I am up and running.”

They all gasp and Lineo Sefotho, who is in charge of our marketing department sniffs. She is very emotional. Everything makes her cry. Either it’s happy or sad news, she will cry. I work with 4 ladies and they all have their functions but they are all certified chefs. Nqobile is in charge of the kitchen. Lineo does marketing. Mitchy Gamanya does the deliveries and Pamela Gabisa is in charge of the finances and makes sure our books balances all the time.

“All because of a little accident with heels? This is witchcraft. Pure witchcraft, I am telling you.” Pamela responds and I just chuckle. My incident was mysterious but I am not going to blame black magic. It was raining, the road was slippery and heels and rain don’t mix, ever.

“What time is your surgery?” Mitchy asks and I shrug.
“The doctor hasn’t confirmed anything but I think it will be during the day.”
“We will be here after it.” Lineo murmurs and I quickly shake my head.
“I will be heavily drugged so I won’t even see you guys. So you can come back the day after tomorrow.”

“Do you want us to contact your family?” Nqobile asks in a quiet tone and I quickly shake my head. I want nothing to do with those people. These four ladies here are my family and they are all I need. Nobody else. “Some guy brought your car to our spot. I will go park it at your house because you won’t be able to drive it for a while.”

“Thanks.”
“Who is he? He is cute by the way.” Lineo inquires. Ohh the tears have passed and she is back to being her noisy self.
“Mbulelo. He is the one who rescued me and brought me. That’s all you need to know. No more questions about him.”

Pamela licks her lips. “Look at you getting securing a cutie shortly after that drama with Monde. Thatha girl.” Yoh u Pamela bakithi. I palm my forehead and shake my head. They all laugh. They know when I do that, I give up. A knock startles us and we all turn to the door. Mbulelo is standing there with flowers and a paper bag. He smiles.

“I didn’t know you had company. I will come back tomorrow.” He quickly says and I chuckle.
“You might as well come in. This will be the last time you get to see me before surgery.”
He frowns and steps inside. “Hello ladies. What surgery? What did the doctor say?” I retell the whole thing and he swallow hard. “That’s awful. I am so sorry that I didn’t rescue you sooner.”

I chuckle. “This is not your fault, Mbulelo. I should’ve took off my heels and walked barefoot to the store. But the blame game doesn’t help anything right now. The damage is already done. All that’s left is to heal and move on.” He nods. Nqobile quickly stands up and offers him the chair.

“You can sit. We are already on our way out, right ladies?” these traitors all agree before hugging me. “We will see you on Saturday then boss.” I smile and they head out.
“Those are colorful friends you have right there.”

I laugh. “Friends and family. They are all I have.” He nods and just stares at me like I am some object that fascinates him. “Please apologize to your sister on my behalf about the tracksuits. I will ask Nqobile to purchase them on Saturday.”

He smiles and shakes his head. “No need. When someone does you a favour, usually they don’t wanna be paid back because that defeats the whole purpose of the word favour. I will cash in on it one day. For now just focus on yourself and your health.” This guy though.

“So you’re married? Engaged? Any baby mama’s?”
He laughs. Yes, someone like him, handsome, rich and kind should be in a relationship. If he isn’t, then there is maybe a psycho there underneath his generous persona. Wolf in sheep skin kind of thing. “Fortunately for you, I have no wife, no fiancé and no baby mama. I am not ready to be a father yet. I am still young and I wanna do all the things in my bucket list before I settle down and get a wife. Because that’s the first step to being a father. Getting a wife, not the other way around.”

“Wow, a 2k that knows what he wants.”
“Please don’t call me that. If you weren’t in a hospital bed, I would show just how much of an old man I am trapped in a young man’s body.” I laugh. He is cheeky and interesting. This, whatever it is, is going to be interesting.
