And so, the turbulent school field trip came to an end.
Boruto went straight to bed without packing the night before. He also overslept the next morning, barely managing to board the ship before their scheduled departure time. But they somehow made it back to Konoha in one piece.
There was just one thing that left everyone feeling a bit downcast.
As the ship drifted away from the docks, Chojuro and several other villagers were there to bid them farewell, but Kagura wasn't among them. And no one knew the reason why.
Inojin and a few others who heard the truth about what happened theorized that it might've been hard for Kagura show his face since he was related to all of the commotion.
But as someone who'd gotten along really well with him, Boruto couldn't seem to understand or accept his absence. His depressed state came off as rather odd to those around him. It just felt weird to see him like that.
More than that... "He hasn't really had to part with anyone before, has he?" Sarada thought aloud.
Whether it was blood relatives or best friends, to Boruto, human relationships were something that continued to increase and not decrease. In a sense, this might've been his first time experiencing the bitter taste of separation...
. . .
Upon their return to Konoha, Sarada and her classmates inevitably returned to their ordinary lives. From now on, they'd take the unordinary experience of the school trip and apply what they learned to further their studies at the academy.
That was the whole purpose of taking a school field trip to The Village of the Mist in the first place. To learn, apply the knowledge, and continue on with life. But Sarada wondered how quickly she would actually be able to return to some resemblance of normalcy after being in a life or death situation...
"And yet here I am, already back to normal." She was shocked at the ease in which she adapted.
Of course, she still intended to keep up her previous pace, allowing a bit of nervous tension to propel her forward through her average life, but Sarada was pleasantly surprised to find things weren't as difficult as she thought they'd be.
On the other hand, Boruto clearly seemed to be dragging his feet through the mud with each passing day. It wasn't exactly a result of their school trip, but rather everything that happened with Kagura. Boruto was still being affected by it just as much as he had been when they left on the boat.
Kagura was brought up at least once a day in conversation, and his friends wore faces that seemed to say, "he's still hung up on that?"
Sarada's true feelings on the matter were that it was about time for him to come to terms with everything, but she couldn't exactly start an argument with him about it. After all, she knew this was his first time separating from someone.
Shortly after their return, Boruto and Sarada, as well as Iwabe, were all called into Principle Iruka's office.
"So... You're telling me you haven't caused any problems, much less any trouble with the shinobi in the Village of the Mist?" Their homeroom teacher Shino asked Boruto. He'd just finished making up a series of excuses in front of their principle.
Boruto said he was just late for roll call because he got lost, which was a blatant lie. It was an excuse he prepared for this very situation earlier that day, but because of how much exaggeration and dramatization he added to it, it didn't seem very convincing.
"I'm an elite student at the prestigious Konoha academy! There's no way I would cause any problems," he said, as though absolutely nothing was amiss.
...Why was he so good at reading the room and putting on a good act when we were in an extremely tense situation, but in times like these he's a complete idiot!
Sarada silently blamed Boruto for his incompetence.
No matter what angle you listened to him from, all you could hear was, "Hello, look at me, I'm lying!"
In a way, this lack of congruency was just another side to Boruto's childishness, but Sarada couldn't tolerate getting dragged into it.
...It's because you do things like this that I'd be sorry to commit lovers suicide with you! **See comment**
While the teachers were distracted by his carefree attitude, Sarada shot him a secretive glare.
After nodding along and listening to all Boruto had to say, Principle Iruka took out a document. "I see... If that's the case, I wonder why this petition was delivered from the Mizukage?"
"...!!"
Sarada was the first to freeze, but she was shortly followed by Boruto and Iwabe.
Iruka only unraveled the scroll and began to read its contents to his stiffened audience. "'Fire and water, for the sake of both countries, the actions of Uzumaki Boruto, Uchiha Sarada, and Yuino Iwabe are justified. We hope to pardon them of any charges pressed against them...' Or so it says."
In other words.
The Sixth Mizukage, Chojuro, accepted Boruto's proposal to treat Shizuma's uprising as nothing more than a childish fight between students on a school trip and local delinquents.
However.
If an academy student from one village gets into a fight with a delinquent from another, especially in the diplomatically sensitive Village of the Mist, that would certainly cause some problems. Chojuro was afraid that the situation would come to light and have major disciplinary repercussions for the students upon their return to Konoha.
The Mizukage was probably thinking that he should take action before word about their deeds spread overseas.
"Since that seems to be the case, I won't ask any questions about the contents of this document, or the fight you got into. But you will be punished for hiding the truth from me."
As he said this, Principle Iruka's lips stretched into a smile.
