(12) You Don't Own Me

"Don't tell me what to do and don't tell me what to say, and when I go out with you, don't put me on display"

Me and Connor walk through the office and I see Gavin finding out about nines

"WHAT, NO, FUCK THAT, I'M OUT" You can hear from Fowlers office

Gavin storms out and sits down angrily

"Why do you two not like each other?" Connor asks out of nowhere

"Where did that come from?" I ask

"Because of the Kamski story I feel like there was more then you told me about how you and Gavin became farther apart" Connor said

I sigh "Connor lets sit at the desk and I can tell you"

Connor sits to listen

I sit and say "This was years ago, when I just broke up with Kamski, and I helped Hank around the office while I was at robotics school"

Flashback

A new officer was hired, his name was Gavin Reed, and he
was Kamski's brother, but I didn't know that yet, I met him for the first time at the station
during the summer

He was shy and didn't talk to me a lot, he didn't seem to talk to a lot of
people. Tina and Chris were cautious about him and Hank didn't like him at all
but Hank doesn't like many people in general

Gavin was very standoffish, worked alone, and
never talked to anyone at the station. He did have a sticker on his jacket that said "Robots are
taking our jobs" showing that he doesn't like the new robots coming out

One day I came up
to him when I was making coffee

"You're Gavin right?"

He looks at me with confusion

"Yeah..."

I ask him "Why don't you sit with me, Tina, and Chris during lunch? You are very quiet, it'd
be nice to get to know you better"

He's hesitant but says "I'll think about it" Then he walks off

I go back with the coffee to my desk next to Hanks. I was confused as to why he was
acting the way he did

Maybe he's just anxious to meet new people I thought

A few hours later, it's lunchtime and as I sit down, Gavin is nowhere to be seen. I guess he
didn't want to sit with us after all.
But before I could start eating, none other than Gavin sat down

"Glad you made it, Tina, Chris, this is Gavin" I said

"Nice to meet you, Gavin!" Tina Said

"Pleasure" Chris Said

They shake hands and Gavin eats

"What made you get into the police business?" Asked Tina

"It was a good internship, the best option I had" Gavin responded

They were all getting along, he started being more open and talked about his cat and interests

He didn't like talking about his family when I asked him

Tina started talking about robots "I heard the robots will start coming into the station, wouldn't it
be cool to have a robot officer?"

That set Gavin to leave

I get up to go after him

I catch up with him

"Gavin?! what the fuck was that?!" I say angrily

He looks at me "I'm sorry, I can't listen to robot talk right now"

I frown "I promise, we won't bring it up again, just come and sit"

He feels bad and smiles at me "Alright"

A few months pass by, Gavin starts making friends with the table, Tina gives him advice for
being a good intern and Chris jokes around with him

Me and Gavin seem to be getting closer

We talk to each other all the time and start getting to know each other

I go to his house
with a bag of Chinese food that Tina gave me to give Gavin

I knock on his door and Gavin
opens it

"Tina told me to bring you some food, may I come inside?" I ask him

"Sure" He smiles at me

It's a mess inside, pizza boxes everywhere and his cat is running around

I pet the cat and
sit at his kitchen table

After eating we sit down to watch a movie, I put my head on his
shoulder and cuddles into him

That night we look at each other and kiss on his sofa

The next morning I wake up on the sofa next to Gavin

Remembering I kissed him that
night I freak out which wakes Gavin up

"We must have fallen asleep while watching The Princess Bride" He says

"Gavin, I'm so sorry for last night, I didn't know what was going to happen" I say while
tears stream down my face

"It's fine, maybe we were meant to be together, and the universe put us in this situation," He said

while grabbing my hand
I smile, feeling happy about last night

A few months go by, we are official and out as a couple at the station

Tina and Chris think
I should be careful as they think Gavin doesn't really like me

We were always together at the station but one day, Gavin goes up to me

Last night was hard on Gavin. He was having a nightmare, screaming and crying in bed, he
woke up next to me, and knew, he was doing things for me, not for himself

Memories came to
him of his parents disowning him and he realized, he didn't love me as much as he wants to but
did it to make me happy

This makes him that next morning at work come up to me

"Y/N, I think we need to talk" He says

"What is it? Is it the nightmares? do you want to talk about it?" I say concerningly

"Y/N, we're over, I don't like you, I pretended to make you happy, but last night I realized I
need to be honest with myself, I'm sorry Y/N, I'm done," He says and walks away

"Gavin wait! we can talk about this, please don't leave." I say crying and weeping as he
leaves

I spend all day with Tina, Chris, and Hank and they tell me he wasn't the one, and that I
will always be welcome with the station

I start getting ready to go back to California for college as summer ends

I say goodbye to
my friends and Hank

And little would I know that in the future, I would meet the real love
of my life

Present day

"He never opened up ever since" I say

"Y/N... You should know, I scanned him and went though his web history as you were talking..." Connor says

"Connor!" I whisper yell

"I just want to tell you, Gavin didn't like you, because he's gay, he's on a dating app, and he's men only" Connor says

"Knew it. I hope Nines makes him happy then" I smirk

"This is why I love you" Connor says

AN: This may have seemed weird and wonky, This was my english short story and I edited it down to fit here, I edited it but it may still seem out of the normal. Thanks for the support, things will ramp up I promise. <3
