3: birthday girl

my birthday is on the third day of august, dad told me it was national watermelon day. we have this tradition of having watermelon for breakfast that day, i like traditions. it's part of the reason i make it my mission to create some with the people i care about.

today claudia and i are going to have a sleepover, we're going to bake a cake together before midnight. then we're going to count down till she can blow the candles out, it happens every year. fin is gonna be there already, of course, i'm not going to be in the middle of him seeing his girlfriend on her special day. if anything i sometimes feel like i third wheel them a lot, feel like i'm annoying too.

"you're here!" claudia's eyes lit up when she welcomed me in.

i hugged her so tight and said, "happy early birthday."

"eeee i'm so excited!" she smiled so wide. i couldn't help but smile wider, i knew that smile was real. it's her smile, her signature 'i'm genuinely happy smile'. her eyes become so small, you begin to wonder if she can even see, her nose scrunches up a little bit, i can see all her teeth and her smile lines show off with her cute dimples that might go unnoticed by some.

"me too, i brought fresh strawberries. bought some from the farmers market." i lifted up the bag in my hands as we walked to kitchen where i saw finneas. "hey ginge, did you miss me?"

"no i in fact did not get the chance to miss you, i saw you before yesterday?" he frowned trying to remember.

"rude." i jokingly frowned at him.

"he's kidding, he missed you." claudia said as she took out the strawberries from my bag.

"uh, how would you know?" he blinked.

"you asked about her yesterday."

"yeah cause you two weren't glued together." he pointed his finger back and forth at us.

"aww fin was worried about me." i teased.

"cause believe it or not i actually like that you're 'besties'" he made air quotes. "you're good for each other." he shrugged.

"aww babe." claudia kissed him. i felt the urge to yell 'get a room!' but in all honesty, these two are the cutest and i would be lying if i didn't say that i wish i had what they have.

i quickly took out my digital camera, "flash warning!" i said before taking a picture. "look at me now." claudia stood behind him, with her arms wrapped around his neck, both of them smiling... click! "cutee!" i said looking at the picture before it disappeared.

"let's get started?" clauds clapped her hands and we went on to be her kitchen helpers as she did most of the work. "alright now we just have to let it chill in the fridge." she sighed once we were done.

"i'll do the dishes." i declared.

"you sure?" clauds asked and i nodded, telling her to go back to the living room where finneas was. even though i'm here, i don't have to be hovering over them the whole time, so i make excuses to distance myself a little bit so they can... be them.
