Anna's feet hurt from walking on hard twigs and other things that littered the floor of the forest. She cried out Paige's name. She heard wolves howl and crows cry in reply. She knew they had taken Paige. Anna felt a cold gaze fixed on her, she whipped around and-to her horror-saw a tall beast hunched over. It was furry and had piercing eyes that seemed to suck Anna's strength. It had big hands covered with wiry hair and equipped with long claws. Anna imagined those claws slicing her throat. She cried out and tried to run away but the beast hooked one of its claws on the back of her nightdress and pulled her backwards. She struggled and tripped over a long stick. Her head hit the ground hard. The beast pulled her up so they were eye to eye with her. Smoke poured out of the nostrils on the end of its long snout. It huffed and scowled at her. The beast used its free hand to clasp around her head and crush it. She let out a final groan before dropping to the ground in a bloody heap.
