Analia

"This is blowing my mind," Harper said as she joined me at the lab's computer.

I glanced up, following her gaze to Iko and Bellamy. They were currently working together to load the cargo hold with enough food to keep us from starving in space while we wait for algae to bloom. My job was to start the preflight checks, starting with figuring out where Becca downloaded the logbooks.

"If someone had told me a month ago that Bellamy and Iko would be in the same room together, I would've laughed. Now they're going to live in space together? This is insane."

"You're telling me," I muttered, downloading the flight files as Raven instructed. "But that's what you do at the end of the world, I guess. Put your differences aside."

"Or work together to save the girl they're both in love with," she said over a grin, earning a glare from me. "Hey, you can't deny it. Everyone knows."

"Figure anything out?" Raven asked, climbing the stairs to us. "We have less than an hour to pull this off."

I faced the computer to her and showed her the logbook I found. "The required aircraft inspections are current. The transponder and altitude encoder are up to date, so now we just have to do the cockpit checks."

Raven grinned. "Good. I'm sending Monty and Murphy to retrieve the oxygen generator from the lighthouse. Harper, finish helping load the cargo. Analia, you're with me. Emori will keep eyes on the drones to watch the radiation wave."

"Got it," we all answered and fell into place.

I followed Raven inside the rocket. It was like being inside our living quarters on the Ark, only smaller, more compact and hard to breathe. How were 8 of us planning to squeeze in here?

"If we're not off the ground at least 20 minutes before the death wave hits, the electromagnetic charge in the pyroclastic cloud will shut down the rocket's avionics, meaning it won't fly. We have to make sure the fuel selectors turn on and hold. Then, we'll start our preflight run."

Once I helped her turn on the switches, she took a seat in the captain's chair. The spaceship was beginning to wake with life and I could see Raven's face light up with excitement. I on the other hand, barely had a clue what I was doing or what any of this meant.

Within a few minutes she demanded, "Computer, start the pre-light check. Engines on."

The rocket obeyed, thrusters humming with a series of vibrations.

"Watch the fuel gauge when I drive, keep a note of the numbers."

I kept my eyes on the screen as she pulled the wheel, climbing... climbing... the numbers started to become deranged- ZAAAAAP.

With a flash of blinding light, electricity combusted throughout the rocket. Heat flared and adrenaline surged. I covered my mouth, sudden smoke blasting my lungs.

The door flew open and Bellamy appeared, rushing towards me. He harshly demanded, "What the hell happened?"

Frustration grew in Raven's expression. "There isn't enough time! We're pushing too hard. Computer, systems check."

The computer's artificial intelligence came across the speakers: Launch system-- optimal. Navigation system-optimal. Life-support system-assessing damage. All life-support systems are offline. Landing system--optimal.

Raven's breaths were pleading. "Comms, talk to me."

Computer: Communication system-- assessing damage. All communication systems are offline.
