11 - A Plague (Toaster)

    We make it to the field. Some of the people around us resemble Alex, weak and fatigued.
     "What's going on? Why do they look so sick?" I ask.
    "I don't know.. maybe it's the strep spreading around? And the violent earthquake probably took a lot of energy out of people." Klicks suggests.
    "Yeah.. that makes sense, I guess." I say. It doesn't, but it seems like the only plausible explanation.
    "Isn't that Doge over there? We shouldn't leave him alone," Vwoozi says. "Hey! Doge! Over here!" Doge doesn't move. "Huh I guess he didn't hear me..."
    "Don't worry I got this, let me do it," —I take a breath in— "DOOOOOOOOGE" His head turns, taking notice of us.
     "How long do we have to be out here?" Doge says as he approaches us. "I'm so c—cold.." He says, teeth chattering.
     "Here, take my jacket." Klicks says as he drapes his coat over doges shoulders.
     "No— It's okay. You keep it." Doge says
     "Stop it, I insist. I don't want you to catch strep too." Klicks says.
     "It's fine. You should protect yoursel—"
     "Ahem." I interrupt. "They're dismissing us now."
     "Oh!" Doge says, turning red. "Thanks."
     "Shouldn't we take Alex to the nurse? He doesn't look too good." I suggest.
     "You're right he looks pretty sick." Vwoozi agrees. "Well! You guys have fun! I'm gonna walk with Doge to class. Come on Doge!"
     "Wtf." I say. And she's gone, out of the field and back into the building.
     "Okay Klicks, Looks like it's just you and me. Take Alex's left arm and i'll take his right." I tell Klicks. Alex groans.
     We arrive at the nurses office, met by a long line of sick, zombie like people.
     "Klicks," I say, "Do you really think this is all because of strep?"
     "I..." He trails off. "It's hard to say.. Maybe??" He says, hesitant.
     "What are we gonna do? We can't leave Alex like this— in this condition— just look at him!" I declare.
     "Mhmnmamnsggfnmmhm" Says Alex
     "Yeah that" —I point at Alex— "That's not normal."
     "Um—" Klicks starts to say.
     Another announcement plays over the loudspeaker, "Hello everyon, All classes are canceled for the rest of today. You may have noticed the abundance of ill students in our campus, know that we are working on resolving this issue. Please return to your dormitories until further notice."
     What is happening.. This must be serious if they're sending us back to our dorms.
     "Toaster," Klicks says, "We're not gonna be able to get Alex through this line in time. Why don't we take him to Vwoozi's dorm? She's one of our top healers."
     "Yeah.." I say, not knowing if we can trust Vwoozi to take care of Alex. "That's better than sitting in this line, that's for sure."
     We grab a wheelchair sitting outside the nurse's room and wheel Alex towards Vwoozi's dorm. We knock on the door desperately.
     "What?" Vwoozi answers.
     "We need your help, let us in" I say.
     She opens the door to her dorm, allowing us in. "What's the matter?" She asks.
     "I don't know if you saw, I mean you would have if you actually helped us with Alex, but the line for the nurse is insane right now," I start. "You're a skilled healer, do you think there's anything you can do for Alex?"
     "I'll try, but I don't know how much I'll be able to do." She says. "I can restore his energy momentarily, but I can't cure him of whatever he has going on."
     "Yeah whatever, that's fine, just make him act normal again." I say.
     She casts a spell to help Alex, "Hoc non vulc aliquid"
     He regains consciousness.
     "What happened?" He asks.
     "You started spasming once the earthquake happened, then you slowly lost consciousness. We got Vwoozi to help you using her magick." I tell him.
     "Yeah.. I think I remember that... Some of it.." Alex says, confused.
     "Guys," Says klicks, "Something definitely isn't right here. People are growing weaker by the minute and the academy is under lock down. Judging by the way it's affecting everyone, it's only a matter of time before it reaches us too."
     "You're right, we need to get to the bottom of this before it's too late. If not us, who else will?" I say.
     "But what are we gonna do? We don't even know what's causing this.." Alex says.
     Doge steps into the light, "I know exactly who to call."
