(It was a bright, peaceful morning. Sunlight danced lazily across the marble floor, and the cool breeze from the open windows carried in the distant calls of street vendors.
The house was unusually quiet for once.
Haseena sat cross-legged on the living room floor, her favorite teddy squished beneath her as she tried to untangle a ribbon she had found on Vansh’s toy truck. She was humming some tune only she understood, occasionally stopping to look around like a little detective in disguise.
In the kitchen, the sound of a pressure cooker’s whistle echoed, followed by the familiar clang of steel utensils.
Just then, the door creaked open.
Ammi entered, slightly tired from the morning trip to the market, but a soft smile played on her lips. In her hand, a small box, delicately wrapped in brown paper with a string tied around it.
Veer and Vansh, who were playing carrom on the other side of the room, immediately noticed.
“Ammi! Kya laaye aap?” Veer asked, already walking toward her.
“Is baar toh kuch meetha lag raha hai,” Vansh added, squinting at the box like it held treasure.
Ammi chuckled and set the package down on the table. “Barfi. Doodh wali. Kal mehmaan aane wale hain Daadi ke saath. Unke liye laaye hoon.”
“Ek ek piece de do na please!” Vansh pleaded with his best innocent look.
“Arey nahi beta, yeh kal ke liye hai. Agar abhi khula toh sab khatam ho jayegi. Aur Daadi gussa karengi,” Ammi said, opening the fridge and sliding the box carefully onto the top shelf.
Haseena had been silently watching everything. Her gaze was locked on the fridge like a hunter marking her prey. Her tiny fingers stopped fidgeting with the ribbon, and her eyes narrowed thoughtfully.
“Barfi?” she whispered to herself.
Ammi turned to look at her. “Haseena, kuch chahiye?”
“Barfi chahiye,” she replied, ever so softly but firmly.
“Arre nahi meri jaan, yeh toh mehmaanon ke liye hai. Tumko toh main baad mein kuch aur accha sa banake doongi.”
Haseena pouted. “Par mujhe wohi chahiye...”
Ammi smiled and gently ruffled her hair. “Kal mil jayegi, promise.”
And with that, she went off to hang the laundry.
Veer went back to his carrom game. Vansh joined him, occasionally sneaking glances at the fridge like it might just open on its own.
But Haseena... she had gone silent.
She looked at the fridge once more. The wheels in her tiny head were turning. Her fingers tapped her teddy’s head like she was plotting a heist.
And from that quiet silence... a new adventure was born.
