Sam's POV
Leaving the two lovebirds behind, I picked my way through the lush green gardens. Frederick always loved living among rich and affluent humans.
This deep into the night, very few humans were awake. The windows of the mansions I ran past were dark, the only sounds those of distant car engines and the sigh of wind through leaves.
"Frederick just arrived," Zyron linked me. "We'll try to keep him here as long as possible, but work fast."
"Yes, your majesty. As you wish, your majesty."
"Smartass," Zyron grumbled. "Just stay safe."
"Yes, your majesty."
Zyron cursed and popped off the link. He's apologized earlier for suspecting me. But I hadn't taken it personally. The situation was quite sensitive, and considering everything that had happened so far, it was only expected they'd suspect their shadows.
I just hoped, as I told Orla earlier, that Jared and Clementine were the ones who betrayed us. I simply couldn't see anyone else doing it.
Pushing my mind away from heavy topics, I decided to have some fun while I scaled a red brick wall between two estates. I linked Orla and Ezra.
"What are you guys doing?"
"Nothing," Ezra replied. "Are you there yet?"
"Close." I grinned. "By the way, Don't do the nasty in my car. I don't want it to reek of sex on our way back."
"Sam!" Orla groaned, embarrassment thick in her voice. Ezra merely growled, annoyed. Teasing those two would always be fun.
Unfortunately, teasing them wasn't enough distraction from the scent. The smell of humans was only a whisper in the air, but its tantalizing notes stirred a buried hunger deep within. It had been so long since the last time I drank straight from the vein. The simple thought made my mouth water and made me disgusted with myself.
I breathed through my mouth and trudged along, scaling another wall. At the top, a black cat sat, paws tucked in, green eyes lazily blinking at me. Her look judging me for my life choices.
"Hey, kitty cat," I whispered. She hissed just to show me she didn't like me, then went back to looking down on me. I shook my head. Cats.
Ignoring the judgmental animal, I increased my pace. The farther I traveled, the heavier the vegetation became around the houses, until they blended with the forest around the city and ivy vines swallowed the walls.
Frederick's mansion was set slightly apart from the others, on the very edge, neither part of the neighborhood nor part of the woods. I made sure I was downwind from it before scaling the wall and peeking over the top. Through the thick trees serving as another protective barrier, I spied a number of vampires in the lush garden surrounding the place. Three. And another three on the other side. That made them six. All of them were younglings.
That was both good and bad. Younglings were not experienced, but they were quick-tempered and their senses were sharp.
Wait, they were all younglings. That was odd. The number of new vampires made every year was closely monitored by Vlad. It was illegal to just go around turning humans. But the fact that Frederick had six new vamps acting as his guards... Hmm. I guess that slimy bastad had been taking liberties behind Vlad's back. Vlad wouldn't like that. Not one bit.
