Mitsuri Kanroji was more than grateful to lead a long life without trauma—that is, the violent and gruesome kind.
Despite her other peers amongst the hashira, she was the only individual to still have contact with her family. She grew up alongside a close family. They were well off and happy.
She was her father's daughter. Don't get it wrong, she loved her mother just as much—but she and her father clicked; they got each other.
From a young age, her strength was that of a grown man. Hell—when she was just thirteen months, she'd lifted a forty pound rock the size of her body.
What made her even more unique was her appetite. She could out-eat any sumo wrestler with ease.
As she grew up, her hair grew longer, and eventually changed color. Her once inky braids had been replaced with rosy pink and lime green strands of hair.
Her mother had told her it was from eating too much sakura mochi. It was her favorite dish; Mitsuri would eat hundreds per day.
Who could blame her? Eating made her happy. Even so, she maintained a small, feminine and dainty appearance.
Mitsuri loved who she was. She took pride in herself—oozed confidence.
Being strong, eating however much she liked, and of course, having an unusual hair color, made her.. her.
Until she came of age and realized she didn't fit
the mold of what bachelors were looking for.Mitsuri craved the idea of being in love; even more of feeling loved by somebody who wasn't her family.
So, she changed everything about herself.
Dyed her hair black, feigned weakness, and starved herself.
She laid awake at night, wondering what the hell was wrong with her; why couldn't she be like the other women in her village; why did she have to restrain her true self in order to be loved?
It wasn't until she almost confirmed her engagement with a suitor, did it click that it was okay to be her true self.
She didn't want to live a lie for the rest of her life.
So she broke it off. She joined the corps. She surrounded herself with people who loved her for who she was.
And when she looks back on where she started, and what she had to persevere through to get where she was today—she wouldn't have it any other way.
"Leave this to me," Mitsuri announced, her eyes glimmering with hints of bittersweet tears, "I will protect everyone."
She launched herself for Zohakuten, her blade's pinkish glow blinding all those who dared to stare at it.
