The trio went back to Reece and Marjories, Autumn, driving them all back. Reece sat in the back seat, still going through the file given to him by his father, unable to believe what he was willing to do to split him and Marjorie up. Every time he looked through it, he was finding out something else about Marjories' past or about her mum or even his dad's plans to split them. Roger hadn't tried to skirt around the fact that he wanted them apart. He was explicit in the details. Autumn kept looking back at him in the rear view mirror, worried about how he was dealing with all this information.
"Reece, I can tell you're all up in your own head. Talk to us. What are you thinking?" Autumn asked her brother.
"I'm trying to figure out how to deal with this. Marjorie is the best thing that's ever happened to me, I'm not losing her or the twins. That's just a non-starter. But I don't know how to protect them. All I'm coming up with at the moment is run away and go into hiding, but can I really ask her to do that, to leave behind everything and everyone she loves?"
Mia had been quiet the whole drive. She'd been thinking the same as Reece, but from Mias's perspective, things could go very differently. "What if you lied to him?"
"What do you mean?"
"Agree to the date. We've got a few months still to get you out of it. Tell him you'll end it with Marjorie, but not until nearer the time. He's always kept someone around as a leg over, hasn't he? Say that's what you're doing, so he can't act on trying to get rid of the twins as she'd be too ill or sad to.... 'meet your needs' as it were. He'd think he'd get to use violence towards her after you've ended it which will make him happy and he'll think you're finally coming round to his way of thinking and behaving which might mean he leaves you alone. You and Marjorie carry on life as it is now, and he'll think you're using her, and it's an act until you end it. Which you won't and by that point, hopefully won't need to because we'd have found a way to deal with him."
Autumn almost looked impressed. "Mia, that's so... devious and cunning." She smirked.
Reece interrupted the girls' conversation, "Are you kidding me? No, I'm not doing that. That's disgusting!!! Also, what if we don't find a way to deal with him? That's setting Marjorie up to get hurt, I can't run that risk."
"Reecey, she's at risk anyway. At least my way we have a bit more control over it." Mia replied.
"I hate to admit it, but I think Mia might be onto something."Autumn said, trying to look into her brothers eyes in the mirror as she did. "This could be the best way to buy us some time while we plan our next move. It might be the best way to stop him from going straight after Marjorie and the twins now. We'll discuss it all with the others. Marjorie, Winter, and Charlotte are a lot more level-headed than the 3 of us when it comes to stuff like this. We'll see what they have to say about the options and if they have any other ideas."
She'd just pulled on to Reeces driveway and now turned to look at him properly. He looked disgusted at the thought of what he might have to do. How could he go to his dad and talk about the love of his life like that? How could he buddy up to his dad like that even if it was pretend? Could he look Marjorie in the eye, knowing he'd have to go and say all that derogatory stuff about her? Would she even what him after all this comes out in the next hour? Will she ever look at him again with that look of unconditional love he'd never seen until he'd met her but was now so comforted by and made him feel so at home?
Autumn could see him turning pale, and his eyes glistened as he tried to hold in tears. He got out of the car, running into the house and straight past the others without saying a word. He ran straight upstairs and locked himself in the bathroom, where he threw up at the thought of the things he may have to do and say, the hurt he would see in Marjories eyes when they had told her all of this and the thought of the fact it would be all his fault. She was going to hate him, and it would all be his fault.
