An Eventful Day at the Nurseries

Reece and Marjorie went back to work the next day. Reece was still trying, and failing to convince Marjorie, she should be starting her maternity leave. She said she was fine. Yes, the twins were more active than normal this morning, but it was nothing she couldn't cope with. Besides, Autumn had a days leave in today, so really, she had to be there.

Reece dropped her off before driving to his nursery to get on with his day. He didn't tell Marjorie, but he'd already told Char and Carly to keep a close eye on her, and he was going to pop back to have lunch with her later. He was sitting in the office with Deliah when the phone rang. Deliah listened to Reece's side of the conversation intrigued.

"Hello?...... Yes it is...... Wait. Are you sure?..... How did it happen?......" He sighed. "OK. When do you need me?......I'll come straight over. Thank you." He put the phone down and ran his hand over his face and around the back of his neck. "Deliah? I need to pop out. I'll be back in a few hours, OK?"

"Of course, Reecey. I've got everything under control for you here. Are you OK?"

He looked at his deputy sat at her desk. "I will be." He said, walking out to his car.

2 hours later, Viv stopped by Marjorie's office. "Hiya Marjorie."

"Alright, Viv. Everything OK?" She asked, sounding concerned.

"Yea, yea, everything's fine, I just wanted to let you know I'm on a late shift today, so Steven is going to pick Jamie up when he picks up Raymond tonight, OK?"

"Oh, OK, no worries, my love, that's fine." Marjorie winced slightly. she thought she'd covered it up well, but Viv noticed.

"Marjorie? Are you sure you're OK?"

"Yes, yes, I'm fine. You worry like Reece. I've just been in a little pain today, but it's nothing major."

"Are you sure? Less than one month to go with twins, they could put in an appearance any day now. It's not contractions, is it?"

"I would have thought contractions would hurt more than this, wouldn't they? And they don't feel that regular."

Viv sighed. "Everyone can be a little different. Come on, call one of the girls or Siobhan to come and cover you. Come to the hospital with me. We'll get you checked out to make sure, and then Reece can come meet us there and bring you back."

"No, I'm fine, there's no need to go to any trouble or worry, Reece."

"Not taking no for an answer, Marjorie, and I go to the gym. I'll carry you if I have to."

Marjorie admitted defeat. As the two women walked out into the corridor, they bumped into Char. "Charlotte, perfect timing." Viv said. "I'm taking Marjorie to the hospital with me. She doesn't think she's having contractions, but I'd rather make sure. Can you cover? If not, call Siobhan. I know she'll come in for this."

"Of course. I'll call Siobhan now. Have you told Reece?"

"Not yet. I'll call him from the car." The girls' conversation was interrupted by Marjories' water breaking. "Still don't think you're in labour?" Viv asked in a slightly smug tone.

"OK, fine, maybe you were right." Marjorie answered. "Oh god!"

"What?" Viv and Char asked, concerned looks on both their faces.

"Reece is going to be so smug about the fact he was right."

The other two groaned at the realisation that that was Marjories' main concern. Charlotte went and got hold of Siobhan, who soon arrived to hold the fort in Marjorie and Autumns absence. Once she'd got Marjorie in the car, Viv called Reeces mobile. It went straight to voicemail, so she left him a message. "Reece, it's Viv. I've got Marjorie with me and I'm taking her to the hospital. I was dropping Jamie off, and her water's broken. She's fine, don't panic. Just meet us there. See you soon." As soon as she hung up, she rang the sister nursery.

Deliah answered. "Hello, the nursery."

"Deliah? It's Viv. I'm looking for Reece."

"Oh, Reecey's not here. He went out a couple of hours ago and hasn't come back yet. Can I help?"

"Do you know where he went? Marjories in labour. I'm taking her to the hospital now, but I need to get hold of him so he can meet us there. I've already tried his mobile, and it went straight to voicemail."

"He didn't say. I'll keep trying him for you, and if he turns up here, I'll send him straight to you."

"Thanks, Deliah."

"Is she getting hold of Reece? Is he covering in the rooms or something?" Marjorie asked.

Viv winced slightly. What should she tell her? Should she lie and say Deliah was going to get Reece or be honest and say no one knew where he was? "Yea, Deliahs on it OK. He'll meet us there in a bit."

She heard Marjorie let out a sigh of relief. It wasn't long before they arrived at the hospital. Vivs insider contacts meant Marjorie was in a room on the maternity ward faster than she would have been if she'd shown up under her own steam. While Marjorie was getting settled, Viv rang the nursery. It didn't matter who answered, everyone there would know Marjorie better than her and would have more of an idea of what to do.

"Hello, the Knight Nursery."

"Bon-Bon, thank god. We have a problem."

"Is Marjorie OK?" Viv had never heard Siobhan sound so panicked.

"No, Bon, Marjories, fine. I can't find Reece.

"What do you mean you can't find Reece? He's 6'3! You can't just lose him!"

"I know that!! He's not answering his mobile, and Deliah said he went out a few hours ago and hasn't come back yet. She doesn't know where he went. I need to start work soon, I can't stay with her. She'll be on her own, and we don't know how long it will take to find Reece."

"Leave it with me, I'll get someone there for Marjorie until Reece arrives, and I'll keep trying to get hold of him. Don't tell her yet. She'll get stressed, and that won't be good for her or the babies. Just say he needs to arrange cover and won't be long. "

"OK. She thinks he's in the rooms at the moment."

"Great, let her keep thinking that. I'll keep you updated." Before Viv could say anything else, Siobhan had hung up.

Charlotte was in the office and heard the whole conversation. "Who are we getting to go to her?" She asked.

Siobhan cocked her head to one side. "We don't have a lot of available options. Well, as far as I can see, we only have one." She said, raising her eyebrows at Char.

"I'm on it." Charlotte replied, pulling out her phone.

Siobhan tried Reece again, and it still went straight to voicemail. She was getting worried. Not only did she know Marjorie wouldn't cope if he missed the birth, she knew Reece wouldn't either. Where the hell had he disappeared to?

Outside of town, Reece handed over all his personal belongings before walking through a just unlocked door only to be greeted by another one. He continued down the corridor. Following the person guiding him. Eventually, they reached a room, and Reece was let into it. He walked in slowly, unsure of what exactly was going to greet him on the other side. There was a bed in the corner. What was on it was completely covered by a sheet. Reece took a deep breath as he approached. The officer that had entered with him walked over to the bed, pulling back the sheet to reveal what was concealed underneath. Reece looked down at a barely recognisable face. It was barely recognisable for who it was and barely recognisable even as a person there was so much damage.

"So," he said, looking down at the battered face below him. "This is where it ends, Dad."
