You'd known Hannah since kindergarten, and over the years, she'd become more than just your best friend—she was family. That meant her older brother, Chan, was like family too. He was the older brother who teased you, protected you, and shared countless inside jokes. You never saw him as anything more though, not until recently.
Chan's visits back home to Australia had become rare with his hectic schedule, so when he finally came back, you and Hannah were thrilled. The reunion was everything you hoped for—filled with late-night talks, laughter, and a sense of familiarity that made you feel at home.
But something was different this time. Chan had changed. He was still the same goofy, kind-hearted guy you'd always known, but there was a new confidence in him, a maturity that made you see him in a different light. And then there was the way he looked at you, a gaze that lingered just a little too long, that made your heart race in a way it hadn't before.
You tried to ignore it, brushing off the tension as your imagination. But one night, after an evening spent with the whole family, you found yourself lying in the guest bedroom at Hannah's house, wide awake. Thoughts of Chan kept swirling in your mind, making it impossible to sleep. You knew he was probably still awake, too—Chan had always been a night owl.
Before you could second-guess yourself, you slipped out of bed and padded down the hallway to his room. You knocked softly, and after a moment, you heard his voice, inviting you in.
You pushed the door open and stepped inside, finding him sitting on the bed with his laptop resting on his knees. The soft glow of the screen illuminated his face, and he looked up at you with a warm smile that made your heart skip a beat.
"Couldn't sleep?" he asked, his voice carrying a note of understanding.
You shook your head, closing the door behind you as you moved toward the bed. "No, too much on my mind."
Chan nodded, his gaze softening. He set his laptop aside and patted the spot next to him on the bed. "Come sit."
You hesitated for only a second before you climbed onto the bed and sat beside him, leaning back against the headboard. The two of you sat in a comfortable silence for a moment, listening to the soft music playing from his laptop. His presence was soothing, yet it did nothing to quell the nervous energy buzzing under your skin.
"I've missed this," Chan said suddenly, breaking the silence. He turned his head to look at you, his eyes searching yours. "Being here with you and Hannah... It feels the same, but also different. Do you feel it too?"
His words sent a shiver down your spine, and you nodded, unable to find your voice for a moment. "Yeah, I do," you whispered, your eyes dropping to where his hand rested on the bed between you.
For a moment, you both sat there, the air thick with unspoken feelings. Then, without really thinking, you reached out and let your fingers brush against his. The touch was light, almost tentative, but it was enough to send a spark of electricity coursing through you. Chan's fingers curled around yours, his grip gentle but firm, and when you looked up at him, you saw something in his eyes that took your breath away.
