The sun was just beginning to rise as Seungmin led you along the narrow trail, the forest around you still cool and quiet in the early morning light. You had always loved hiking, and when Seungmin suggested an early morning hike, you were excited to spend some quality time together in nature. But something about Seungmin's behavior this morning was... off.
Normally, he was calm and composed, but today, he seemed like a bundle of nerves. His usual steady pace was uneven, and he kept glancing back at you every few minutes, offering a tense smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. You couldn't help but wonder what was going on.
"Are you okay?" you asked as you climbed over a large rock in your path.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Seungmin replied quickly, his voice slightly higher than usual. "Just... uh, making sure you're not getting too tired."
You raised an eyebrow, knowing full well that you could out-hike him any day. "I'm fine, but you seem a little distracted."
He laughed awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck. "Just a lot on my mind, I guess."
You didn't push him further, though his strange behavior continued to gnaw at you. You chatted about random things as you walked, but Seungmin was clearly preoccupied. Every time you asked him a question, he'd respond a little too late, as if he was lost in thought.
After what felt like an eternity, you reached the top of a hill. The view was breathtaking—rolling hills stretching out beneath you, the forest bathed in the golden light of dawn. It was the kind of view that made you feel small in the best possible way, like you were a part of something vast and beautiful.
Seungmin stopped at the edge of the hill, taking a deep breath. His hand reached into his pocket, and your heart suddenly skipped a beat as realization began to dawn on you.
"Y/N," he began, turning to face you. His expression was a mixture of determination and fear, his eyes searching yours for something—maybe reassurance. "There's something I've been wanting to ask you."
You felt your pulse quicken, everything around you fading into the background as you focused solely on him.
"I've been thinking about this moment for a long time," Seungmin continued, his voice trembling slightly. "You mean everything to me, and I can't imagine my life without you. I want to spend the rest of my life making you happy."
He dropped to one knee, pulling a small box from his pocket. Your breath caught in your throat as he opened it to reveal a beautiful ring, the diamond catching the morning light.
"Y/N, will you marry me?"
Tears welled up in your eyes as you nodded, barely able to get the words out. "Yes, Seungmin. Yes, I will."
Seungmin's face broke into the widest smile you'd ever seen, but as he reached out to slip the ring onto your finger, his hands were shaking so much that the ring slipped from his fingers. You both watched in horror as it tumbled to the ground, bouncing once—twice—and then disappearing into the underbrush.
For a moment, there was complete silence. Then Seungmin let out a small, panicked noise, dropping to his knees to search the ground frantically.
"I—I can't believe I just did that," he muttered, his voice thick with emotion. "It was supposed to be perfect, and now I've ruined it..."
You could hear the tears in his voice, and your heart broke for him. You dropped down beside him, your own hands brushing through the grass, searching for any sign of the ring. But it was nowhere to be found.
"Seungmin, it's okay," you tried to reassure him, but he shook his head, sitting back on his heels and covering his face with his hands.
"It's not okay," he said, his voice muffled. "I wanted this to be perfect for you, and now... now it's a disaster. I lost the ring before I could even get it on your finger."
You stopped searching, reaching out to gently pull his hands away from his face. His eyes were wet, and he looked so devastated that it made your heart ache.
"Seungmin, look at me," you said firmly. "Perfect is boring. Do you really think something as small as this would make me change my mind?"
He blinked at you, clearly struggling to believe your words. "But... I messed everything up."
"No, you didn't," you insisted, taking his face in your hands. "The only thing that matters is that you asked me, and I said yes. That's what's important. The rest... it's just a funny story we'll laugh about later."
He looked at you, his expression softening slightly, but still filled with uncertainty. "But the ring..."
"Forget the ring for a second," you said, a small smile tugging at your lips. "I want you, Seungmin. And I'm not letting you off the hook that easily."
You glanced down at the ground, your eyes catching something glimmering in the grass a few feet away. Your heart skipped a beat, and you quickly crawled over, pushing aside some leaves to reveal the ring nestled in the grass.
"Found it!" you exclaimed, holding it up triumphantly.
Seungmin's eyes widened, and he let out a shaky laugh, relief flooding his features. "Oh my god, you found it."
You crawled back to him and placed the ring firmly in his trembling hand. "Now," you said, still smiling, "put this ring on my finger where it belongs."
He let out a breath he'd been holding, nodding as he carefully took your hand in his. His fingers were still shaking, but this time, he managed to slide the ring onto your finger without dropping it.
You looked down at the ring, tears welling in your eyes again, but this time from pure happiness. You wrapped your arms around Seungmin, pulling him into a tight embrace.
"This was perfect," you whispered into his ear. "Because it was real, and it was us. And that's all I ever wanted."
He hugged you back, burying his face in your shoulder as he let out a relieved sigh. "I love you so much," he murmured, his voice full of emotion.
"I love you too, Seungmin," you replied, pulling back just enough to look him in the eyes. "And I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you—even if you do drop the ring every now and then."
He laughed, a genuine, joyful sound that made your heart swell with love. And as you sat there together, on top of that hill with the sun rising behind you, you knew that this moment—imperfect as it was—was exactly how it was meant to be.
