After the group left Carlos to explore the Dark Net to see if he could find any more information on the villains' plans and whereabouts,

"And if anyone could do it, it would be Carlos." Ivy and Ginny both proudly said at the same time, even though they are worried about Carlos on a dangerous website.

Mal decided to visit her mother. It bothered her too much to think that the mysterious M in her note might actually be Maleficent and she wanted to see for herself that her mother was still a lizard.

"I mean yeah, that would be me too." Ginny muttered, even though she didn't want any contact with her 'mother' and is died for twelve years now, she still wanted to know if that was her, and in fear.

It was late when she arrived in the library, almost time for lights out.

"Never too late to visit family."

The royal guards, trained in imperial battle tactics by Mulan,

"Trained by the best." Lonnie said, giving her mother a smile, a smile she gladly returned.

stood in front of the double-locked doors and barred her way.

"Really? You know it's me," Mal said. "Open up. Family visitors are allowed under the royal decree," she reminded them like she did every time she grudgingly visited.

"Exactly."

The guard on the left grinned. "Oh yes, I see the resemblance now, I think it's the forked tongue," he joked, like he always did.

"At least he's putting her at ease."

"Ha-ha," said Mal, pushing her way inside.

The guard on the right grunted. "You have five minutes."

"She knows that."

"I know," she said as they locked the door behind her and she made her way to the pedestal in the middle of the room with a glass dome sitting on top of it.

Persephone and her children... and her two older granddaughters couldn't help have a smirk at that, clearly enjoying the sight of Maleficent in her lizard form.

When she was a little girl,

"Uh oh, here we go."

Mal had been very frightened of her mother.

"I mean who wouldn't be frightened of her, she was the queen of all evil."

Maleficent was not the help-with-homework, bake-cookies type, after all.

Well now she is, Beau thought to Malantha.

She was more the fearsome mistress who sent you on hopeless quests—like the one to retrieve her Dragon's Eye scepter—and she didn't take no for an answer.

Malantha, Everleigh, Jacob/Jake, Beau and Conor oh who am I kidding... and Ginny tilt their heads in confusion, it is pretty obvious that they want to know how that happened. (In their own time.)

Even so, these days Mal found it hard to believe she had once feared Maleficent. It was difficult to feel scared of something so small.

"I mean it is rather ridiculous." Emir said, causing Ben to groaned.

But the anonymous message from M had spooked her.

"I mean it spooked me." Emma said. "And I didn't get an anonymous message."

Mal stared at her mother, who appeared to be sleeping.

Under the glass dome, she looked like any ordinary lizard, harmless, cute even. But Mal knew better. No matter how harmless the reptile looked, it was still the Mistress of Darkness at heart.

"Yep, exactly."
