CHAPTER SIX ━━━━━━━
IT'S SPEARMINT.
NATE MADE ANOTHER COLOURFUL SHOE BOX.
This one though, was even fancier with a face on the side of it, ready to collect money from the players to get Sam something special for his birthday. The birthday the trio of coaches decided they would celebrate after the game on Saturday. Ted sent Sam off upstairs before capturing the attention of the players.
"Hey, guys. Listen up. Okay, Sam's birthday is on Saturday. So I was hopin' we'd all chip in and get him somethin' nice. Nice gift or somethin', right? So, Nate's gonna be comin' 'round with yet another impressive box," Ted explained, he gestured to the box in Nate's hands with an excited grin, "Look at this! It's got a face!"
"He has a face," Nate corrected.
"Sorry. It – he. He."
"Yeah, you put the money in his mouth," Nate explained, shyly smiling as he gestured to his newest box creation.
"Okay, you hear that, y'all? Put the money in his mouth. Got it? Okay, good. Go get 'em, Nate," He clapped Nate on his back.
Nate nodded and began to make his way around the room. Collecting money from the players.
Robyn stood in the threshold of the offices. Her arms folded over her chest as she leaned against it. Her eyes watching as the players gave generous amounts of cash, with some giving more than others, wanting Sam to have a genuinely special day. Robyn's brows furrowed when she spotted Nate at Jamie's cubby, frowning at the number nine player who was sat on the bench with a smug smile on his face.
The same smug smile she wished she could just punch off his face.
"Yummy for you," Jamie said in a mocking tone., keeping his eyes on Nate as he took out his gum from his mouth and pressed it into the slit of the shoe box, "It's spearmint. Makes the money smell nice."
"Thank you, Jamie. That's incredibly thoughtful," Nate mumbled sarcastically.
Robyn felt her blood boiling as she watched Jamie laughing obnoxiously whilst Nate continued down the line. With the rest of the players giving him money and making sure to watch out for the piece of gum as to not give Nate more of a cleaning job.
She pushed herself off the door, ready to storm over when Ted grabbed her arm. She looked over at him and he sent her a small shake of a head. He squeezed her bicep and before she could argue him on this, he was the one to walk over towards Jamie. Robyn stayed behind, glancing over her shoulder at Nate now in the office, using some tissues to try and get the gum off of the notes.
"Hey, Jamie, real quick. Just wanna have a chat," Ted said, walking to stand in front of Jamie, who was now fully dressed in his own clothes and standing up, clearly ready to leave the locker room, "Did you put gum in the box there?"
"Oh, yeah, yeah," Jamie said in a bored tone.
"Now why'd you go and do that?"
"Ah, sorry, coach," Jamie shrugged. His tone insincere.
"Nate's just trynna help us out 'ere. He's part of the team, right?"
"Yeah, right, coach. Yeah. And I see this team like a band."
That seemed to intrigue Ted, "I love that," He said sincerely.
"If we were the Rolling Stones, I'd be Mick Jagger, 'cause I'm the front man," He wiggled his shoulders, "I've got the moves."
"Tiny waist, yeah," Ted shrugged, "The whole bit. I get it."
Jamie nodded as he continued, "And Roy would be Keith Richards, 'cause he's old and everyone's surprised he ain't dead yet."
Robyn bit her lip. Although she loved Roy as if he was an older brother, she did also love to annoy him with jokes about his age. And she couldn't deny that the one that Jamie had just said did tickle her slightly. Slightly. Even though she would never admit it to the cocky bastard.
She watched as a shirtless Roy stood up from the bench. Having also heard the dig.
"What the fuck are you sayin'?"
Jamie turned to look at the older player. He glanced down at his hairy chest and scoffed, "Roy, mate, if you're gonna go to the shower, you should take your sweater off first, pal."
Roy didn't respond back. Instead he just rolled his eyes before turning around and walking off towards the showers. Leaving Jamie to laugh hysterically at his own joke. Whilst Ted just stood there, looking at Jamie unimpressed.
"I'm just takin' the piss, man," Jamie told him once he stopped laughing, "I'll be better, yeah? Promise," He lifted three fingers up as if an American Boy Scout.
"Glad to hear it," Ted nodded and left to go back to his office. Patting Robyn's shoulder on the way past. As soon as his back was turned Jamie instantly began to wank off the air towards his coach, earning a few laughs from some of the players still hanging out in the locker room. Ted spotted him in a mirror, he sighed and shook his head.
Robyn rolled her eyes, "You're such a twat," She told Jamie.
He grinned at her, "And you fuckin' love it."
She scoffed, "You wish," And with that, she turned around and walked into the office. Handing Nate a large wad of money to add to Sam's birthday fund.
Nate's eyes almost bulged out of his head when he saw the amount.
She shrugged, "Get him something good, yeah? Maybe something to help him feel less homesick," She ordered to which Nate quickly nodded, taking on board her suggestion, "All right. Bye boys," She said, grabbing her bag and twirling her fingers as she walked out.
Ted grinned as he looked at Beard, "She's warming up, isn't she?"
Beard nodded, looking impressed, "Definitely."
