CHAPTER SIXTEEN ━━━━━━━
SACRIFICES.
AND THINGS CERTAINLY DIDN'T END WELL.
But not in the way that Robyn Welton had assumed. Instead, it turned out that Dani Rojas loved football so much –'Football is life!' ( the phrase she wouldn't be surprised if he had tattooed all over his body with how much he yelled it), that even after practise was over, the Mexican player decided to practise even more. Only to trip and hurt his knee.
Only thing that was weird, was the fact that he insisted that something that wasn't there pushed him.
And Robyn was reminded of the silly belief that far too many of the players had of one of the treatment rooms being haunted. By a fucking ghost.
Which in turn, led Ted to bring them to Mae's pub and have the woman retell the history of what the stadium once was. A pop-up hospital for wounded soldiers. Soldiers that many believed still roamed the place. And the only way to get rid of them? A ritual.
To give up something important to them.
And that's how Robyn found herself standing in one of the storage rooms at Nelson Road with all of the players (par number nine as expected), Nate, Ted, Beard, Higgins and even Rebecca. All of them gathering with their own personal possessions that they were ready to sacrifice.
Robyn fiddled with the ring that sat on her pinkie as she glanced around the room. She stood in between Roy and Sam, with the latter of the two rubbing her shoulder when she first came to stand beside him.
"All right," Ted clapped his hands together. They had been waiting on Jamie but seemingly he wasn't going to show up and they couldn't wait forever, "Roy, why don't you get things started for us?"
Robyn glanced up at the captain. She noticed slight hesitation in his step but as soon as he saw that the whole team's eyes were on him, he knew he had to do this. Being a captain after all was all about leading, both on and off the pitch.
Roy stepped forward, holding a small blanket in his hands, "I was nine when I got scouted by Sunderland. I'd never left London before, my grandad drove me all the way there, and it was freezing, and I was terrified."
Some of the boys laughed. Robyn rolled her eyes.
"I was fuckin' nine! Say something!"
The room quickly quietened down.
Roy's voice lowered as he continued, "When I got there, he gave me this old blanket. He said it was to keep me warm and to remind me of home," He let out a small sigh, "And that was the last time I ever saw him, 'cause he passed away by the time I got back for Christmas, so...that's why blankie means so much to me."
