A few days ago, Chawoon had met the imam of the local masjid. Their conversation had left in between and the very next day, Chawoon found himself walking back to the same place. After the initial greetings, Chawoon hesitated. The words he wanted to say felt heavy on his tongue, but finally, he gathered the courage to speak.
"If I wanted to know about Islam and how to become a Muslim... what should I do?"
The imam's face lit up with a gentle smile. "I've seen many people come here to revert, but I'm always curious what draws you to Islam? Especially since, in Korea, Muslims are not very common."
Chawoon's gaze dropped, and he shifted uncomfortably. "Honestly, I didn't know much about Islam before," he began. "But then... I fell for a girl who has a beautiful soul And through her, I fell for Islam." " I was an atheist before "
The imam raised his brows in mild surprise but remained silent, encouraging Chawoon to continue.
"She taught me how beautiful this religion is. Because of her, I started looking into Islam. I watched videos about the miracles of the Quran and the stories of the prophets. I started believing in Allah."
Chawoon's voice grew softer, more emotional. "I began to make dua to Allah. When I share my problems with Him, my heart feels relieved." His voice broke, and tears welled up in his eyes. "But I'm scared... scared of what people will say if I become close to Allah. Will allah accept me? I don't even know if I'm a Muslim or not..."
The tears spilled over as he began to sob.
The imam leaned forward and gently hugged him, his voice soft and comforting. "Don't worry about people," he said. "Allah is the One you are here to please. People will never help you in times of true need, but Allah will always be there for you. Remember that, okay?"
Chawoon nodded slightly, his tears still falling.
The imam continued, "Indeed, Allah found you lost and guided you" (refers to a verse from the Qur'an, specifically Surah Ad-Duha (93:7))
Imam continued "Let me tell you something. If you believe in Allah and that He is the only God, and if you believe no one else is worthy of worship, then you already have half faith."
Chawoon's brows furrowed in confusion. "What do you mean?"
"A Muslim is someone who bears witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad peace be upon him is His servant and messenger," the imam explained.
A small, hesitant smile broke across Chawoon's face. "I believe that. I believe Allah is One, and our beloved Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him showed us how to live through his Sunnah. I've watched so many videos about him. He made dua for us, he loved us, and he guided us to be better Muslims."
The imam's face shone with happiness at Chawoon's words.
"Then you are ready, my brother," the imam said warmly. "The shahada is the declaration of faith.
Repeat after me my son"لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ
Transliteration: La ilaha illallah Muhammadur Rasulullah
Translation: (There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad be peace upon him is the Messenger of Allah.)
Once you say this from your heart, you are a Muslim."Chawoon's eyes glimmered with determination and relief as he prepared to take the first step into a new chapter of his life.
He closed his eyes and repeated after imam
