Just for some context, I have heard of Devil May Cry during my childhood and my teenage years, and I never checked them out. I only ever watched youtubers play Devil May Cry when it came out (namely 8-BitRyan when he played it), and I watched Capcom vs Marvel infinite and Dante was one of the characters that stood out the most, so I got even more interested in the series.

And now we're here, so let's discuss Devil May Cry 5, my first ever Hack-n-Slash game, with the next one being Bayonetta.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Premise:

Devil May Cry 5, is the latest installment for the Devil May Cry series that began back in 2001, with Devil May Cry. Devil May Cry 5 has 3 playable characters, with a fourth one being available to be played on the Special Edition or bought as a DLC for the base game. The 3 playable characters are the iconic protagonist for the series: Dante, the son of Vergil: Nero, and a new character named V, who we all know is now Vergil who tried seeking more power and decided to cast away his humanity to become a full demon, and his humanity manifested as V, and the fourth buyable character is of course Vergil as a DLC Character.

Throughout the story of DMC 5, it takes place in either flashbacks or in present day which spans about half a day, with each mission taking place at different times throughout that same day. Throughout the first half of the game we play as Nero with a new moveset revolving around Demon Breakers which are kind of like the Legion Arms from Lies of P each of them had a different effect and affected the enemies in different ways, but you are able to use a gun, and a powerful sword against your enemies where you can also 'rev up' which is another word for charging the sword to do bigger combos and more damage. In the later area we play as V who controls three other demons: Griffon, Shadow, and Nightmare, who all have there own movesets. And in the final part we play as Dante, who is the most fun to play as.

The final boss, or bosses, is Vergil which makes sense given the fact that Vergil became the Demon King: Urizen when he rejected his human side, and his human side formed V, and would later be reunited with Urizen, becoming Vergil once more and then having to fight Vergil twice. Once as Dante, and the other time as Nero. Also, the fact that Nero can stagger and then deal a huge amount of damage to Vergil was so surprising and made you feel like your the boss, at least it did for me.

Gameplay:

If you've seen my other reviews, you would know that I love Soulsborne and Soulslike combat systems, and I don't remember ever playing a hack-n-slash unless you want to count Honkai Impact 3rd and Punishing Gray Raven, so the gameplay and the style of fighting was very different and took some time for me to grow on, but I did enjoy it, and the way each of the characters played was fun and different so it would allow for some replayability if I ever want to play the game again.

Nero's gameplay is quite simple, you have his sword: Red Queen, and his revolver: Blue Rose, which are both fun to use. It took some time for me to get use to the combos that I would unlock, but when I did, it got really fun. And the use of the Devil Arms and his Devil trigger in the final boss fight made it even more fun.

V's gameplay is also simple. V, himself, cannot damage the other enemies and can only finish them off with his cane with his three familiars: Griffon, Shadow, and Nightmare being the ones who primarily do the damage. Griffon is a ranged attacker, Shadow is a physical attacker, and Nightmare is the devil trigger for V, and all of them are useful in there own ways, I prefered using Griffon especially his lightning attacks which would do a lot of damage, against his opponents.

Dante's gameplay was the best out of all of them. His sword Rebellion and the other swords and weapons he gets later were so cool, I was not expecting to be able to use a motorcycle as a weapon or nunchucks from Cerberus, which were fucking badass! And using Ebony and Ivory along with the shotgun was also cool. I prefered using Ebony and Ivory. But then the Devil Trigger, and the Sin variant were also fun to use.

Vergil was a character I was interested in playing as but when I realized I had to play through the campaign again I decided to only do a couple of missions and he was pretty fun to play with, I won't lie there. He plays similar to Dante except his Devil Trigger forms a double that aids you in battle, but you can still activate a Sin Devil Trigger which was also fun to use.

The Story:

The story of Devil May Cry 5 was very interesting, and I really liked all of the characters that were a part of it. The boss fights weren't that impressive to me, some that did impress me were Urizen, Artemis, Malphas, King Cerberus, and Vergil, being the most impressive and fun bosses, the rest were just... eh... some bosses, specifically a group of knights, and dancing demons became basic enemies which was fine with me since Lords of the Fallen and Dark Souls 2 did the same thing.

The timeline for the game made it very easy for me to follow with the time for each day helping me know when each fight took place and how long it lasted, which really helped in the later game when V, Dante, and Nero were all doing there own thing at the same time.

And the dynamic between Dante and Vergil towards the end of the game was also a nice touch, and I feel like the constant mention of there rivalry towards the end was a bit too much. Since it was mentioned every second to me it seemed, when Vergil ended up appearing in the last 3 missions to the game.

The Dialogue:

Okay... you all can hate me for this, but oh my god. I love and hate the dialogue with this game.

All of the characters have some good and bad dialogue with Dante, V, and Nero having the best which makes sense for Dante and Nero who are both the quip and trash talking masters for the game so hearing there comebacks and jokes was so fun, and then V with his wise ass attitude was also nice.

But at times the dialogue would be kind of annoying or way to edgy, and this is coming from a fanfiction writer. This was mainly at the beginning but it got better overtime with the dialogue getting more serious and less joke based which definitely helped with the playing experience. But at the beginning some of the dialogue was... eh... kind of corny and cringey but as the story went on it got more serious and more better.

Ending Thoughts.

Devil May Cry 5 was a very good game to play and I may check out the rest in the future at some point.

But I'm going to rank Devil May Cry 5 as a 9/10, it is an alright game, the dialogue can be corny sometimes, but I love the music it was so good!
