Chapter 22: Whalesong Island

Rafayel double checks that he has everything packed in his luggage; clothes, skincare, a polaroid camera, and anti-nausea pills. For someone who literally came from the sea, it's funny how Rafayel gets seasick from riding boats. Though at the same time, it also made sense because Lemurians don't ride boats so the feeling of seasickness is something only land dwellers can experience, right?

Still, he prefers being seasick over riding a plane.

Just like Rafayel, you've also packed your things into a small leather duffle bag, just enough for 2 nights. The duffle bag smells and feels like expensive leather. You pray Rafayel doesn't notice that you've already accidentally scratched it with your nail.

"By the way, I called the hotel for a reservation and they only have one room left," Rafayel says with a frown. "Are you.. alright with that?"

"Oh. Yeah, of course," you say, not really seeing a problem with that. After all, you've been sleeping in his bed for the past few days, though you do keep a considerate distance and haven't really done anything with him in bed. Ever since the incident with Hian, you've felt uneasy leaving Rafayel alone, and he seems to want to keep you close as well—both because he's worried about potential attacks and because he wants to be near you in case your Evol spirals out of control at night. Still, you're pretty sure Rafayel's just asking you out of courtesy though.

"Cool, I'll book it right away!" he responds.

You wonder though, if there were more rooms available, would you choose to sleep separately? It would be a little weird to go out of your way to ask to be in a different room, yet it would also be kind of embarrassing to ask if you could sleep together. Oh well, it's a good thing that you didn't have to make a choice.

Rafayel called for a cab to take you to the port terminal as he didn't want to drive his sports car and park it in a public space. You arrive at the port at 5pm and board the ferry.

"Where are you going? Our seats are this way," Rafayel calls you right before you make a wrong turn.

"Wait, what?" you say, looking up at the signs to make sure you didn't see incorrectly. "But the seating area is here though?"

"This is for the economy section. We're in first class."

"Oh."

The first class section is on a completely different level. The seats are three times bigger than with private partitions, reclinable seats, pillows, blankets, TV screens, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Well, you're definitely not complaining.

On the boat, Rafayel asks how you met Xavier for the first time. You recounted your first encounter with Xavier and your incredibly genius plan that fabulously failed.

Rafayel snorts and bursts into a fit of laughter after hearing that you pretended to be on the verge of having explosive diarrhea in order to get away from Xavier.

"Seriously—ahahaghh! What is—HAHAHA! What is wrong with you?!" he exclaims with tears in his eyes.

"I don't know, okay! I was desperate to get away and I saw a public restroom and I thought, surely he wouldn't follow a girl into a restroom, right?"

"That plan is so dumb! HAHAHAH!" Rafayel laughs.

"It's only dumb because it failed. If it worked, you'd be calling me a genius."

"I mean—why would you even do such a thing?! You could've just stalled and waited until I came out of the cafe!"

"Well, I thought it would work! How would I know that Xavier had superhuman tracking abilities? Like how did he even know that I went out of the window from the back? Also, I didn't want you to get into trouble with me!"
