Sophie's POV
Zach and I meandered our way through the rows of chairs lined up on the bleachers. It felt like forever, but eventually, we found two empty chairs and sat in them.
Nichole has been coming to school less and Less. She's been worried sick about Naylene and it is having a toll on her.
I know how it feels.
Losing Dad initially made me want to never show my face at school ever again because I was so scared that I would be bullied.
And like yesterday, Nichole showed up so it's just me and Zach.
My eyes scanned the gym and they fell on Bella and Theo snickering away and laughing.
I took a deep breath.
He can't hurt me.
He can never hurt me.
Zach's gaze followed mine and soon he knew what I was looking at.
"Hey, you okay?" His eyes filled with concern.
"I'm good," I plastered a small smile on my face.
"I'll try to get over it... eventually.
I moved my gaze away from them and fell on Dorothy talking to her friends.
It's good to see her social life thriving.
As the teams walked onto the court, all the chatting died down and was replaced with screams and shouts.
"You're not a sports person, are you?" Zach said raising an eyebrow.
"Is it that obvious?" I said, laughing.
Zach nodded, picked up my hand and gave it a gentle squeeze that felt comforting.
The game went into full swing and the sound of the basketball thumping and sneakers screeching against the floor.
Just then the basketball came flying at my face and I could still smell the iron smell of blood in the air.
"Oh no," Zach said moving my. fingers away from my face.
"What?! What?! WHAT?" I said my voice etched with alarm.
"You have a nosebleed we need to take you to the nurse's office," He said pulling me away from my seat.
I could feel all eyes on me as Zach ushered me away from the gym
"So sorry I didn't mean to hurt you," The guy said and I'm certain he's the one who threw the basketball.
"No problem," I mumbled.
As we were making my way to the nurse's office I felt something shove me hard and my head slammed against the locker and I slid onto the floor.
"Ow," I managed to let out.
My eyes flickered open and the last thing I saw was Zach's concerned face and Bella smirking.
***
I tried to sit up but I felt a sharp pain in my head and collapsed back on the pillow."Hey the doctor said you shouldn't sit up yet," Zach said.
Dorothy lightly stroked my hair.
"Am I in the hospital," I asked my voice barely above a whisper.
Zach and Dorothy nodded simultaneously.
"You're still curious so that means we're safe for now," Dorothy said making me laugh a little.
