How to Spend Fridays in Ramadan

the first Jumu’ah of ramadān is here already - a blessed day in a blessed month (time going by so fast😭)

ya Allāh, ease our hardships, grant us relief, and fill our hearts with peace - keep us away from harm, protect us from illness, and guide us on the straight path

may this Friday be a source of mercy, forgiveness, and countless blessings for us all, aameen 🤲🏻

Alhamdulillah, it’s Jummah (Friday), a blessed day in Islam, and during the month of Ramadan, its significance increases manifold. It is a day filled with opportunities for immense rewards, spiritual purification, and deep connection with Allah. Let’s explore how to make the most of Fridays in Ramadan by incorporating essential Sunnahs and recommended acts, with references from the Qur'an and Hadith.

1. Perform Ghusl (Ritual Purification)

One of the emphasized Sunnahs of Jummah is performing Ghusl before attending the Friday prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“If a man takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, then uses his (hair) oil or perfumes himself with the scent of his house, then proceeds (for the Jummah prayer) and does not separate two persons sitting together (in the mosque), then prays as much as is written for him and remains silent while the Imam is delivering the Khutbah, his sins between that Friday and the previous Friday will be forgiven.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 883)

Starting the day with Ghusl not only fulfills a Sunnah but also ensures physical and spiritual cleanliness as one prepares to stand before Allah.

2. Dress Nicely and Wear Perfume

It is encouraged to wear one's best clothes and apply perfume (for men) when going to Jummah prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“O gathering of Muslims! Allah has made this day an ‘Eid for you, so take a bath and wear perfume.” (Ibn Majah 1098)

Ramadan is a time of heightened spirituality, and making an effort in our appearance for Allah’s sake is a form of worship.

3. Recite Surah Al-Kahf

One of the most virtuous deeds on Fridays is reciting Surah Al-Kahf. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever reads Surah Al-Kahf on Friday, a light will shine for him between the two Fridays.” (Sunan al-Kubra 5856)

To make it easier to read Surah Al-Kahf on Fridays, consider these tips:

Start reading from Thursday night.

Read a portion after Fajr and before Jummah prayer.

Familiarize yourself with the Surah so it becomes easier to read each week.

Memorize parts of it for greater reward and ease of recitation.

4. Send Blessings Upon the Prophet ﷺ

The importance of sending Salawat (blessings) upon the Prophet ﷺ on Fridays cannot be overstated. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Increase in sending blessings upon me on the day and night of Friday, for your blessings will be presented to me.” (Sunan Abi Dawood 1531)

A simple yet powerful way to do this is by reciting: اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ

5. Give Sadaqah (Charity)

Ramadan is the month of generosity, and giving Sadaqah on Friday multiplies the reward. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday.” (Sahih Muslim 854)

Combine the blessings of Friday with the virtues of Ramadan by helping those in need.

6. Make Dua and Engage in Dhikr

Friday holds a special hour where Duas are accepted. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“There is an hour on Friday during which no Muslim servant stands, prays, and asks Allah for something but He will grant it to him.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 935)

Don’t miss the opportunity to make du’a during the last hour of Asr on Friday!
It is a blessed time when prayers are more likely to be accepted. Take a moment to sincerely ask Allah for His mercy, guidance, and blessings—whether for yourself, your loved ones, or the entire Ummah. May Allah accept all our supplication. 🤍

Recommended Dhikr includes:

SubhanAllah wa bihamdihi, SubhanAllah al-‘Azeem

Astaghfirullah (seeking forgiveness)

La ilaha illallah (affirming Tawheed)

7. Attend Jummah Prayer and Listen to the Khutbah

The importance of Jummah prayer cannot be ignored. The Prophet ﷺ warned:

“Whoever neglects three consecutive Fridays, Allah will place a seal upon his heart.” (Sunan Abi Dawood 1052)

8. Be Early for Jummah Prayer

The angels record those who arrive early at the mosque for Jummah. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“On Friday, the angels stand at the entrance of the masjid recording the names of those who arrive one by one. When the Imam ascends the pulpit, they close their scrolls and listen to the reminder.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 929)

9. Reflect on the Blessings of Jummah

Fridays in Ramadan remind us of Allah’s greatness and mercy. No matter the challenges we face, we must trust in Him. As stated in the Qur'an:

“Indeed, with hardship comes ease.” (Surah Al-Inshirah 94:6)

The Angels carry a roll book 📖

Every Friday the angels carry a scroll, occupying each gate of every mosque.

The angels roll out their scrolls, recording the names of those who rush in one by one. (Sahih Bukhari 929)

They gather around and lower their wings around those who invoke Allah’s name — filling that which is between them and the lowest heaven (Hadith Qudsi)

Fridays remind us that God is bigger than our fears, worries & doubt.

Remember you survived too many storms to be worried about raindrops..

Conclusion

Fridays in Ramadan are a golden opportunity for believers to maximize their rewards. By following the Sunnahs of Jummah, engaging in acts of worship, and making a conscious effort to draw closer to Allah, we can make the most of this blessed day. Let’s strive to make every Friday in Ramadan meaningful, so that it becomes a source of immense barakah in our lives.

May Allah grant us the ability to benefit from the blessings of Friday and Ramadan. Ameen!
