Quit It Before Ramadan!

Ramadan is the month of mercy and forgiveness. It is the perfect time to break bad habits and develop good ones. Since Shaytan is locked up during this month, your only battle is with your nafs (inner desires). This makes it much easier to leave behind habits that weaken your imaan (faith) and replace them with better ones.

So, what are some habits you should quit before Ramadan, and how can you replace them with better alternatives?

1. Quit Music - Replace It with Quran Recitation & Islamic Lectures

We often use music to control our moods, but it only makes us slaves to our desires. Instead, fill your heart with the Quran, which brings true peace. Allah says:

"Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest." (Quran 13:28)

Start by listening to the Quran, nasheeds without instruments, or Islamic lectures. The more you listen, the easier it will be to let go of music.

2. Cut Ties with Non-Mahrams - Replace It with Strengthening Family Bonds

Haram relationships destroy your Akhirah (Hereafter), your future, and even your coming generations. The Prophet ﷺ said:

"When a man is alone with a woman, the third of them is Shaytan." (Tirmidhi 2165)

Instead of engaging in haram, spend time with your family-your parents, siblings, and relatives. Strengthen your bond with them and seek their duas.

3. Fix Your Sleep Schedule - Replace It with a Productive Routine

Sleeping late leads to missing Fajr Salah and feeling lazy all day. The Prophet ﷺ said:

"O Allah, bless my nation in their early mornings." (Sunan Ibn Majah 2236)

Set a fixed bedtime, wake up for Tahajjud and Fajr, and use the early hours for Quran recitation and self-improvement.

4. Quit Mindless Scrolling - Replace It with Beneficial Knowledge

Social media consumes hours that could be used for ibadah (worship), learning, or helping others. Instead of wasting time, read the Quran, Islamic books, or listen to beneficial content.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Take advantage of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before your busyness, and your life before your death." (Hakim, 7846)

5. Never Skip Salah - Replace It with Consistency & Khushu (Focus in Prayer)

Salah is the foundation of Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said:

"The first deed for which a person will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection will be his Salah." (Abu Dawood 864)

How to fix it?

Set alarms for every Salah.

Pray on time, and if you already do, work on praying with khushu (deep concentration).

Encourage family and friends to pray together.

6. Stop Gossiping & Backbiting - Replace It with Dhikr & Good Speech

Backbiting is like eating the flesh of your dead brother (Quran 49:12). Instead of gossiping, engage in dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and speak only good. The Prophet ﷺ said:
