Seokjin's hands trembled as he stared at the ornate teacup, the floral pattern blurring through the unshed tears welling in his eyes. The aroma of the jasmine tea, usually a comfort, now felt suffocating, a prelude to the suffocating future his father had laid out for him.
"Jin-ah," his father's voice was softer than usual, laced with a plea that Jin had rarely heard. "Please understand. This... this is for our family. For our safety."
Jin finally looked up, his gaze meeting his father's weary eyes. He saw the lines etched deep around them, lines born of years of servitude and the constant shadow of fear that clung to their lives. He knew his father had worked tirelessly, first for Jungkook's formidable father and now for Jungkook himself, the young but ruthlessly efficient leader who had inherited the empire.
"Safety?" Jin's voice was a choked whisper. "Appa, you want me to marry him for safety? The man who is the danger?"
His father sighed, running a hand through his thinning hair. "Jungkook... he is powerful, Jin-ah. And he respects me. If you become his husband..." He trailed off, unable to articulate the twisted logic that equated marriage to a feared figure with security. "Our position will be... solidified. I will have more influence. No one will dare to touch us."
The words felt like a physical blow. Jin recoiled, pushing back from the polished mahogany table. "Influence? At what cost, Appa? My entire life? My happiness?"
"Happiness is a luxury we cannot always afford, Jin-ah," his father said, his voice firming slightly. "This is a necessary alliance. Think of it as... a duty."
Duty. The word echoed in Jin's ears, cold and heavy. He understood duty. He had always been a dutiful son, caring for his younger siblings, helping his mother before she passed. But this... this was beyond duty. This was a sacrifice of his very being.
"I can't," Jin finally choked out, the tears now spilling down his cheeks. "I just... I can't."
His father's brow furrowed. "What do you mean, you can't? You will."
"No!" The outburst surprised even Jin himself. He rarely raised his voice, preferring gentle persuasion and quiet understanding. But this was different. This was his future being bartered away. "I can't because... because I love someone else."
The silence that followed was thick enough to cut with a knife. His father stared at him, his expression shifting from concern to disbelief and then to a simmering anger.
"Love someone else?" His voice was dangerously low. "Who? Some... some commoner?"
Jin's chin lifted slightly, a spark of defiance flickering in his tear-filled eyes. "His name is Namjoon. He's... he's a musician. He's kind and gentle and he sees me, Appa. He sees me."
The mention of another man, a man outside their world, seemed to snap something within his father. He slammed his hand on the table, the teacups rattling. "A musician? Are you insane, Jin? Do you have any idea the life Jungkook can offer you? Power, wealth..."
"I don't care about power or wealth!" Jin cried, his voice trembling. "I care about being loved, about being happy. Something Jungkook can never give me. He's a monster, Appa! Everyone whispers about the things he does..."
"Those are just rumors," his father said, though his voice lacked conviction. He knew the rumors were likely true. He had seen the coldness in Jungkook's eyes, the ruthlessness in his decisions. But he had also seen the respect Jungkook held for him, a respect he desperately wanted to parlay into security for his family.
"Rumors that cost people their lives!" Jin retorted, his heart pounding in his chest. "I can't marry him, Appa. I just can't."
He turned and fled the room, the image of his father's disappointed and angry face burning in his mind. He ran to his small room, the only sanctuary he had in their opulent but fear-filled home. He sank onto his bed, burying his face in his pillow, the sobs wracking his body.
Namjoon. Just the thought of him brought a sliver of comfort amidst the crushing despair. Namjoon, with his warm smile, his intelligent eyes, and the way his music made Jin's soul sing. They had met by chance in the bustling marketplace, Jin captivated by the melody drifting from Namjoon's small stall. Their connection had been instant, a quiet understanding that blossomed into a deep and tender love.
Now, that love felt like a fragile flower about to be crushed under the heel of a merciless fate. How could he marry Jungkook? How could he bear the touch of a man he didn't love, knowing that Namjoon was out there, his heart breaking just as Jin's was?
He knew his father would not relent easily. Duty and fear were powerful motivators. But Jin couldn't bring himself to do it. He couldn't betray his own heart, couldn't condemn himself to a lifetime of lovelessness.
As the night deepened, Jin made a decision. It was a desperate one, born of fear and a fierce clinging to the only happiness he had ever known. He would find Namjoon. He would tell him everything. And together, they would find a way out, even if it meant facing the wrath of the most dangerous man in the city. The thought terrified him, but the alternative - marrying Jungkook - terrified him even more. His heart ached for Namjoon, for the life they had dreamed of, a life that now hung precariously in the balance. He had to fight for it, even if it cost him everything.
