Chapter 5
Just as I started to panic, light trickled into the room. I turned towards it to see that it the guy had opened another door, just across from the other one. I breathed a sigh of relief and scurried towards it. I’d never liked the dark.
The second door led to a huge room filled with people all talking loudly. There was also a stage with some sound equipment set up, along with the bands instruments. This must be where the concert is being held, I thought. I wondered why I didn’t hear all the noise from the other room, then, remembering that Joel had said that this was secret concert, I realised that the room must be soundproof.
Allie followed in behind me, a relieved expression on her face. She must’ve been thinking the same thing I was about that guy.
My heart rate was just slowing when suddenly someone came up behind me and put their hands on my shoulders.
“Hey Rubix!”
I jumped a mile in the air and spun around at the same time, clutching my chest. “Joel! Bloody hell, you scared the crap out of me!”
Joel looked amused. “Sorry. Why are you so jumpy tonight?”
“Ha, no reason,” I laughed awkwardly. “Where are Mason and Rhys?”
“They’re just setting stuff up,” he murmured. His eyes strayed from my face and down to my body, and he nodded appreciatively, smirking.
I pulled at my skirt and crossed my arms over my chest. “Stop staring.” Suddenly I remembered that Allie was standing next to me. I turned towards her. “This is my best friend, Allie,” I told Joel.
Her eyes looked like they were about to pop out of her head as she surveyed the boy in front of us, and her face was slightly pink, probably from trying not scream. I’d given her strict instructions not to squeal at the guys.
She let out the breath she’d been holding. “Hi,” she squeaked.
“Hey,” Joel said, giving her a smug smile.
Joel turned back to me. “I have to go on in about 5 minutes, so I’ll catch you later. Meet us backstage after, okay? Hope you like it.” He winked and turned to walk towards the stage, but stopped suddenly and turned back again. “By the way, you look really good tonight—both of you.”
I blushed and smiled at him as he left. Allie was staring dreamily after him.
“Wow! He’s even hotter in person!” she cried.
I rolled my eyes. “Come on. Let’s go, they’re about to start.”
We pushed through the crowd to the front of the stage just as Joel, Mason and Rhys came on. Rhys sat on the stool behind the drums, twirling his drumsticks as he did so, Mason grabbed his bass and Joel reached for the microphone, grinning right at me.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we are Game Over!” Joel shouted into the microphone. Everyone screamed and shouted.
They started off with one of my favourites, ‘Temper’.
It was amazing, being so close to them while they were performing. I knew all the words to the songs, and I sang along with Joel, Allie and the rest of the crowd. After a few more songs, Joel spoke.
“Hey, guys. Thanks for coming; it’s been great so far. Uh, well I’ve been working on a new song; it’s called ‘Never Let Go’. It’s not completely finished, but, uh, here it is.” He turned and nodded his head at the guys, signalling for them to start.
