Chapter 9

Friday afternoon, as I was walking out the school gates, I felt someone grab my shoulders. I jumped slightly as I spun around.

I was about to yell at whoever had scared me, until I looked up into two bright green eyes, partly covered by a dark hood.3

Joel smiled crookedly at me. “Sorry. Did I scare you again?”

I chuckled. “A little bit. What are you doing here? What if someone sees you? You’re gonna get mobbed by fan girls.”

“Hence the hoodie. And I’m here to pick you up from school. I was wondering if you wanted to go see a movie with me.”

            “Sure,” I smiled.

He smiled back before turning and walking to his car with me following. We drove to the cinema that Mason and I had come to just yesterday, and Joel pulled into a parking spot and threw me a hoodie. I put it on straight away, now knowing the reason for it. Was this, like, a regular celebrity thing?

We headed in and had a look at the list of movies that were available to watch. Joel suggested the horror movie that Mason and I had watched. I bit my lip; I hadn’t exactly told Joel about my… let’s just say ‘outing’… with Mason. It most definitely was not a date.

“Um, I’ve seen that already,” I said.

            “Oh, okay. With Allie?”

I shook my head. “With, uh… Mason.”

            He frowned. “Mason? When?”

            “Yesterday, just before you called.”

“He asked you out on a date?”

“Well, it wasn’t a… date, exactly,” I defended.

He laughed. “It was definitely a date. Well, for Mason it was anyway.” He tilted his head to the side as he looked at me. “What was it for you?”

“It wasn’t like that for me.” Not much, anyway. “Please don’t be mad,” he whispered.

He took in my worried expression and laughed again. “Don’t worry; I’m not mad at you. We weren’t even together, so it doesn’t matter.”

We continued picking our movie, and after much debate we decided on a romantic comedy. We bought popcorn and drinks and entered the dimly lit theatre. The lights shut off as we sat in our seats, and I suddenly felt very nervous. It just hit me that I was sitting next to Joel Evans, in a really dark theatre, about to watch a romantic movie! I let out a deep breath and started to watch the movie.

About halfway through, I felt Joel’s hand slip into mine. I looked down at our entwined hands and smiled as my heart started to race.

After that, I couldn’t really concentrate on the movie, and it took all my willpower not to turn to Joel and just stare into his amazing eyes.

He’d definitely find that really creepy.

When the movie finished and the lights came back on, we left the cinemas and went back to his car. I pulled my hoodie off and Joel did the same, and we threw them into the back of his car.
