Chapter 1
Life’s a game. You just have to know how to play it. But playing this game we call our lives isn’t easy. There are no straight rules as to how to play, what to do, and there are always obstacles. Obstacles that can knock you off your feet, and block your path in life. There’s always something to get you back on your feet, but sometimes, if you're not careful, those obstacles can kill you.

“Aaaagghhh!!!”
As soon as I walked in the school gates I was attacked by a big ball of blonde. My best friend Allie ran into me, screaming, and knocked me onto the grass.“Ruuuubiiii!!” Her high-pitched squeal rang in my ears. “Rubi, Rubi, Rubi, Rubi, Rubi!” She’d gotten up (not bothering to even attempt to help me up off the ground) and was jumping up and down. I clambered to my feet and put my hands on her shoulders.
“Allie! Calm down!” She was hyperventilating by this point; sometimes she got a bit too excited. Even with me holding her down, she was still bouncing, and her breathing hadn’t slowed. I slapped her face.
“Ow! What was that for?” Allie cried, rubbing her cheek. I slap hard. Suddenly her already bright blue eyes lit up, and she forgot her pain. “Rubi, guess what!”
I rolled my eyes. “What? What could possibly be so important that you had to knock me over, squeal in my ear and make me slap you?”
Allie beamed and started talking so fast it was almost inaudible. “Well you know my cousin Daisy, the one with the blond hair and the really long legs? Yeah. Well she knows this girl, who’s going out with this guy, whose brother is a friend of this other guy who is a bouncer at this club, and it turns out that the club that he works at is Hype!”
I raised my eyebrows. “So?”
Allie’s jaw dropped. “Are you kidding me? Hype is Game Overs favourite club! They go there all the time! How could you not know that?”
“Right. Well how do you know that?”
She sighed. “It was in Teen magazine. Duh!”I rolled my eyes again. “So what’s Hype got to do with anything?”
“No,” she groaned. “It’s got nothing to do with the club. The guy that works there is really good mates with the guys from Game Over, and he has Joels number! And he gave it to his brother, who passed it on to his girlfriend, and she gave it to Daisy, who gave it to me!!” she looked as if she were about to burst, and her face was a little red from talking non-stop.
I had no idea what the hell Allie was talking about, and I probably still looked extremely confused—which is probably why it was Allie’s turn to slap me. “Get with it, Rubi! I have got Joel Evans’ phone number! Eeeeeeeep!” Oh my God! Again with the squealing! She was jumping around again and still squealing. It was getting on my nerves. I mean, sure she’s my best friend but sometimes she was just down-right annoying.
