Chapter 19

“Okay, so you go in there, break up with him and then get out. Got it?” Allie said.

I nodded. We were sitting at the kitchen table, eating breakfast and going over our plan.

“Don’t let him say too much,” she told me. “Otherwise he’ll rope you into not breaking up with him. And you are going to break up with him,” she added sternly.

“I will, I will, I will. I’ll do it, Allie. Don’t worry.” I sighed and shook my head. There’s no way I wouldn’t. The doorbell rang and I jumped up to go answer it. It was Rhys. “Oh, hey Rhys. What’s up?”

“Uh, I was just wondering if Allie was here. I need to talk to her, and she isn’t at home, so…”

“Yeah, she’s here. Come on in.”

I led him through the house to the kitchen, and as soon as Allie spotted him she jumped into his arms.

“Hey, babe,” she said, kissing him.

“Hey,” Rhys said. “What are you guys doing?”

“Rubi’s going to break up with Joel,” Allie told him.

“Allie!” I hissed, glaring at her.

            “What?” she said innocently.

            “You’re what? Why?” Rhys asked.

“Because he cheated on me,” I muttered.

            “That prick! With who?”

            “Mandy.”

“And she—” Allie began, but I ran up to her and clamped my hand over her mouth.

“No, Allie. Shut up,” I said. I heard a muffled “Why?” from between my fingers, and I just shook my head.

            Rhys frowned. “What?”

“Nothing. It’s not important right now, don’t worry,” I replied.

            “Okay…”

I released my hold on Allie and stepped back.

“Well, go get ready,” she said. “Come on, you’ve got a dickhead to dump!”

I laughed and went upstairs to get ready. When I was finished I walked back down the stairs to find Rhys waiting for me at the bottom.

            “Be careful,” he warned me.

I nodded. “I will. It’s fine, he said he wouldn’t hurt me anyway.”

He raised his eyebrows. “And you believed him?”

I frowned. He’d promised he wouldn’t. He wouldn’t go back on his word, would he? “Of course I believe him.”

But now there was that tiny little bit of doubt in the back of my head, telling me I shouldn’t do this. He did cheat on me, after all. Who knows what other lies he’s told? But I ignored it and shook my head.

“He won’t.” I walked past Rhys and went back into the kitchen where Allie was. “Okay, I’m ready.”

            “Great. Now go!”
