Chapter 14
I pulled up in front of my house and jumped out of my car. Allie got out of her car at exactly the same time, and we raced each other to the front door. Allie got there a second before I did and slammed her hand on the door.
“I win!”
I sighed and pouted playfully. “You suck.”
She just poked her tongue out at me. I opened the door and we walked inside. Mum was standing in the hallway; she had obviously heard our commotion.
“Hey Mum,” I greeted her. “I’m sleeping at Allie’s house, okay?”
“For the weekend or just the night?”
I turned to Allie. We hadn’t discussed that; we normally spent the whole weekend together when we had sleepovers.
“All weekend,” she said without even glancing at me.
“Okay,” Mum said smiling. “I guess I’ll see you on Sunday, Rubi. Bye girls.”
She went into the lounge room, and Allie I bounded upstairs. I grabbed my overnight bag and started putting some clothes in it, along with my toiletries and stuff. When I was finished we went back downstairs and I called out “Bye Mum,” before leaving the house. I left my car where it was and got into the passenger seat of Allie’s car. We set off for her house and got there just as Mandy did.
Allie knocked on the door, and her mum answered.
“Hello girls.”
“Hey, Wendy,” I greeted her.
“Sleepover tonight?”
“Yeah.”
“You girls are as thick as thieves when you’re together,” she laughed. “Well, have fun.”
“Thanks. We will.”
We all smiled and waved goodbye before running upstairs to Allie’s room.
“So what are we doing first?” I asked.
“We’re painting our nails!” Allie cried.
I groaned. I really hate doing that. I’m not a complete girly girl, not like Allie, but I’m not really a tomboy either. I guess I'm kind of in between.
“Come on Rubi. It’ll be fun!” Allie cried.
“Yeah, that’s what you said last time.”
She blushed. The last time we had a sleepover Allie decided we were gonna paint out toenails and do face masks and stuff, and her older brother walked in on us wearing mud masks with towels around our heads, painting our nails. It was so embarrassing.
“Don’t worry. Cole’s off at college, so we won’t have a repeat of that,” she laughed awkwardly.
“I still don’t wanna do it.”
“Too bad.”
I sighed, knowing she was gonna make me do it anyway, and followed her into her room.
For the next five hours we painted our nails, put on mud masks (I refused to do that, though. I couldn’t remove my make-up because of the bruise), did our hair and all that other girly stuff. It was torture.
I couldn’t help but notice that Mandy wasn’t her usual enthusiastic self. She was normally really bubbly, like Allie, but tonight she seemed kind of out of it. Maybe we should’ve listened to her when she said she wasn’t feeling well. Now that I think about it, she’d been like this for the last couple of months. Maybe something was wrong with her relationship with Mason. If he’d done something to her, he’d get it. It was no different to if Rhys were to hurt Allie. They were both my best friends. I’d have to ask her about it tomorrow.
