Whether it's the parents, main character, best friend, or siblings, someone will die. This happens more in some stories than others.
For example, before Lynn goes to the 1D concert, she says goodbye to an aunt or uncle, because her parents died. Or Lynn gets to Camp Half-Blood and the monster chasing her kills any family, best friend, love interest, and Charles Xavier along the way.
Really? You're not the serial killer author like J.K. Rowling, Susan Collins, and Veronica Roth! Leave the mass murders to them. Plus, having a few, dramatic deaths is a lot better than having 73624847 meaningless deaths.
