The next morning, I want to go visit George again. My mother stops me.
"Eleanor, you've been going out an awful lot lately. Where have you been going?"
I shrug. "Out."
She narrows her eyes at me. "Are you sure about that?"
"Mother, what on earth are you going on about?"
"I was listening to the radio. There have been quite a few home invasions lately."
"What?"
She nods. "I don't think I want you going out anymore."
I sigh and go upstairs without starting an argument.
I can sneak out later.
---
After my mother decides to take a nap, I sneak out of the house. I run to the library's curb. George looks up at me.
"It was getting late. I didn't expect to see you."
I blush and play with the hem of my blouse. "I snuck out."
"Excuse me?"
I nod.
He smirks. "Getting feisty, aren't we?"
My blush deepens. "I'm surprised you're talking so much."
At that, his smirk fades. He doesn't say anything.
"I didn't mean for you to—"
I cut myself off. There's no point.
He's silent.
