Lyra

I jolt awake to pounding feet and a small voice saying:

"Merry! Merry! Wake up! My friend is sick! He needs water. Please!"

"Sick is he? Give him some medicine, boys!" A Uruk says

Uruks growl, then one pours a sticky red liquid into Merry's mouth. Merry chokes.

"Stop it!" Pippin yells

"Can't take his draught!"

"Leave him alone!"

"Why? You want some? Huh? Then keep your mouth shut."

"Merry."

"Hello, Pip." Merry says

"You're hurt." Pippin says

"I'm fine. It was just an act." Merry says

An act?! What a lie!

"An act?" Pippin asks

"See? I fooled you too. Don't worry about me, Pippin." Merry says

One of the big orcs sniffs the air.

"What is it? What do you smell?" An Uruk asks

"Man-flesh." The Uruk replies

"Aragorn!" Pippin whispers

"They've picked up our trail! Let's go!" An Uruk says

Legolas

Aragorn is lying down with his ear pressed to the ground. He then turns to me and Gimli.

"Their pace has quickened. They must have caught our scent. Hurry!" He says

Aragon runs off, I start to follow but look behind me briefly

"Come on, Gimli!" I call to the dwarf

"Three day's and night's pursuit... no food, no rest, and no sign of our quarry but what bare rock can tell." I hear Gimli grumble as we run.

The thee of us run across plains. We enter a valley, Aragorn bends down to pick up one of the leaf broaches that are on our cloaks, one of them must have dropped for us to find.

"Not idly do the leaves of Lorien fall." Aragorn says

I stop and turn to Aragorn. I feel my heart rise with hope that the hobbits and my Lyra are still alive.

"They may yet be alive." I say

"Less than a day ahead of us, come!" Aragorn says and takes off again

Gimli stumbles and rolls to the ground.

"Come Gimli! We are gaining on them." I call back to Gimli as I run

"I'm wasted on cross-country. We dwarves are natural sprinters. Very dangerous over short distances." Gimli says

The three of us come over a hill and pause, gazing across the plains.

"Rohan. Home of the horse-lords." Aragorn says "There's something strange at work here. Some evil gives speed to these creatures, sets its will against us."
