The date with Ray was mild, nothing interesting. He had a little picnic for us in the surrounding trees. Too bad there just wasn’t any sparks. He talked for ages about how he could kick Micah’s ass anytime, anywhere. I honestly didn’t care. I mean weren’t we on a date? Wasn’t he supposed to be complimenting me on how pretty I looked? Especially in the beautiful black dress Liza lent me?

He was a gentleman though, so when he dropped me home I let him kiss me goodnight and I agreed to go on another date with him.

When I made it back to my room, Liza asked me about a gazillion amount of questions. Like ‘was he a good kisser’ or ‘did he like the dress’. Once she realized I didn’t have an ‘after date’ glow, she stopped talking.

“It was bad wasn’t it?” she asked.

“Yes! Well it wasn’t that bad. It was mediocre. There just wasn’t any sparks, but I agreed to go on another date with him.” I said with a sigh. I was starting to realize that leading on Ray was probably not a good idea. I mean what if he actually started liking me.  The next thing Liza said woke me up from my thoughts.

“I bet you wanted to be on a date with Micah.” She saw my surprised face and continued. “I couldn’t help but catch that scene with the both of you today. Well I’m sure everybody caught it. You know it’s forbidden to date a wolf?”

“But I’m not dating him! And Forbidden?” she nodded. “Well it was nothing, so don’t worry”

“Didn’t look like nothing.”

“Liza please. Micah’s not interested in me, he’s just… well you know… he’s just Micah. Always playing with a girls heart.” I whispered the last part to myself.

There was a long break.

I looked to her and then I remembered Micah and me’s conversation today.

“You know what he told me? He said he loved me. Isn’t that just ridiculous?” I said with a fake laugh. “How could he possibly love me, we barely know each other-” she stood up abruptly.

“He said what!”

“That he loves me, but its load of bullcrap.” She came to stand in front of me.

“No it’s not Henrietta. When a wolf imprints that’s it. Forever! And I know because Micah’s not the kind of guy who just says the ‘L’ word to just anybody” I looked at her dumfounded. That can’t be true.

“What do you mean imprint?”

“It means that you’re his mate. It’s like he can’t get enough of you. He’s biologically drawn to you, well that’s what the textbooks say. But Henrietta this is big, you’re like the only witch to have been imprinted on by a werewolf.”

“But…” I collapsed on the couch, startled.

“So when he said he loved me he actually meant it?” I said looking at Liza. She nodded.

“But that doesn’t mean you can act on it Henrietta. If The Order found out about this, they could remove you from the school, or worse take away your powers.”

“Why would they do that for?”

“They might see you as a threat. If you were to breed with a wolf that would change everything. They don’t want Halflings running around.”

“Breeding! This is too much.”

“That’s what I’m saying, so I would suggest staying away from him. It’s going to be difficult because he’s an alpha and he can sniff you out, but just stay clear. Oh and watch out when your with Ray, Wolfs don’t like to share.” I found that out the hard way.

The next day, I faked being sick so I could stay home. Truth is I really just didn’t want to see Micah or Ray. So two hours after school started I got dressed and headed out for a walk. It was a nice day and I wanted to take a stroll in the forest. In the daytime it was actually quite pretty.

I was quietly humming when I heard some whispering. I quickly hid behind a tree, hoping I wasn’t seen. There weren’t any threatening screams so I was in the clear. I strained my ear, and this time I didn’t need my magic to hear what they were saying.

“Micah is taking too long. He keeps procrastinating, and I think it’s because of his little liking to that witch. We have to proceed without him. This war needs to end, and the wolves are the ones that are coming out alive.”

“Your right. The heart of the battle is not in this realm so it will take a while for the news to reach the wolves there. But when the elders catch wind of this they’ll finally send the troops here to wipe out the witches.” I had to cover my mouth to stop my gasp.

The guy continued.

“This is going to work Allen!” I heard them high five each other. “When they take out this generation of witches it will weaken them to no return.” After a few laughs from them, they walked away.

I had to balance myself on the tree, because I knew if I let go, I would crumple to floor. How could they kill innocent people like that?

I ran back to my dorm and started packing my bags. Something deep inside me wouldn’t let this happen. I was not about to let the wolves kill innocent witches like they were some bug on a wall. The door creaked open and I hoped it wasn’t Ray or Micah. When I turned around I was glad it was just Liza.

Once she saw my packed bags, she ran to me.

“What’s wrong Henrietta? Why are you packing?” I contemplated if I should tell her, and I decided I would. I mean two witches is way better than one.

“Okay do you remember when I told you I went for a walk that day? I was lying.”

“No shit.”

“Just listen. That day I was going to run away, but on my way I overheard some of the wolf’s talking. They were planning an attack on us. And later today, I heard them say they were going to tell their elders and when they hear it there going to slaughter us.”

Liza looked like she was about to throw up.

“But Liza listen to me, I’m not going to let that happen. I’m going to the heart of the battle-”

“To do what Henrietta! What can one lonesome witch do to stop a full blown slaughter?”

“I won’t be alone Liza, I’ll have the other witches and … and I’ll have you, right?” she didn’t say anything for a while.

“I’ll understand if you don’t want to come, but promise me you’ll escape here. It’s too dangerous-”

“I’m coming with you. You’ll be useless without me.” She jumped up and hugged me.

“Don’t count me out.” A voice said.

Liza and I both turned around to see Ray standing at the door.

“Ray how did you-”

“I was coming to bring you some get well soup when I overheard you guys talking. And you’re not doing this alone, I’m coming too.”

“Ray this will be dangerous. I don’t want you to get hurt.” He chuckled.

“Psh. I’m as hard as steal sweetheart. Nothing will take me down.” He said with a smile.

This idea is looking better by the minute.

“Okay, Ray meet us in front of building A in forty minutes.” He nodded and was off.
