Interview: TrivStar

Author of "Killing (And Other Games)

What can we call you (name)?

Triv :-)

Where are you from?

Melbourne, Australia--right at the very bottom of the world.

What is your favorite hobby?

Other then sleeping, probably playing Xbox and watching films way too closely. Oh and reading of course!

Coffee or tea?

Tea

Interesting fact?

I have lived in many different countries including Singapore, Japan and Korea

What book(s) are you reading now?

Outside of Wattpad I'm reading Under the Dome by Stephen King and the Prose Edda which is basically the summary of Norse mythology (kind of like their bible). It's very interesting although very strange...

Who are your favorite Wattpad authors?

I'm not one of these wattys who sticks to just a few authors, I tend to just search for a genre and read the most interesting looking one, but SumireHime is great and Lady_Lucia.

When and why did you start writing?

It's kind of cliché but I've been writing since I can remember. There was never really a point where I went 'okay, I really want to write stories now' it was more like an inevitable thing. Although I will say that I started off by writing plays, not books, which was probably due to me being in at an acting school at the time. Since then I've branched out to a whole lot of writing mediums (especially novels).

Is there a specific genre that you like to read/write?

Science/ Speculative fiction is my genre. Mixed with a bit of dystopian action, I'll read anything that's in that genre. There's something just so exciting about Scifi, it feels like you can really do anything with it as opposed to historical fiction or teenfic which is so restrictive in my opinion.

What or who inspires you in your work?

Firstly, the world around me inspires me. I've travelled extensively and I'm constantly amazed at the quirks of the planet--just small, strange things create entire possibilities. Case in point: route 66 in America is one of the most eerie, exciting places I've ever been and I've been constantly inspired by the desert intersecting with human civilisation ever since. Don't ask me why! As for who; Neil Gaiman, Chuck Palahniuk, and Bret Easton Ellis inspire my writing style whilst Suzanne Collins and, dare I say, Cassandra Clare have inspired me in terms of ideas and how to mould your ideas into something readable. George Orwell is also incredible in terms of world building and ideas for me.

Can you tell us a bit about your current story and why people would want to read it?

My current story I'm 'promoting' (I guess) is Killing (And Other Games) and basically it's my attempt at paranormal romance/ fantasy. It's got a bit of a twist, as most of my writing does, it's a little cliché but I'd like to think not TOO cliché, it's got some wicked characters and some fun scenes. It's a genre that I've never really attempted before and a style I've never really attempted before so to be able to write a full novel was great. As to why you should read it: people like it! I've gotten some good reviews and I think it's a quick, easy, enjoyable read. And it's got some thriller and mystery elements (honestly, it's a mash of every genre) so I think it's interesting!

Is there a message for your readers in your work?

Oh I'm sure there is one deep down inside (ha!). I didn't set out with a particular theme or message to explore with this but I think the major message it's portraying by the end is that everyone is hiding something and everyone is a victim and to become a hero, to help people, you have to move away from waiting for someone to solve things for you. I think I might be the only one who got that message from my story!

Do you have any advice for other writers?

I'm not qualified to hand out advice! The one thing I am pretty good at is coming up with concepts and I would say to aspiring writers who can't think of what to write: ask yourself a what if question. What if nobody could read anymore? What if the aliens are amongst us? What if the core of the earth is filled with lollies? (Haha). And I guess once you've got a really interesting question start to branch out and consider how this could effect people socially, economically, politically, personally, mentally etc etc and build a story around that. This is basically the core for speculative fiction and I think it's a really great place for anyone to start.

Is there anything else you would like add?

Nope!

A/N: I have reviewed "Killing (And Other Games)" by TrivStar.
