Cameron's POV

I watched as the fire popped, releasing sparks into the air that blew out just as quickly. From across the fire I could feel Micah’s eyes on me, staring. Constantly staring. That boy had some major creeper issues. I continued to watch the fire and ignore him. Another pop and more sparks flew into the air, mixing bright orange specks and dark night sky. It looked like something from a Barbie movie. In fact, the whole situation felt like that. Girls get lost on island. Girls meet boys on island. Stranded. No way out. Nice yet hairy guy and a total jerk-face. When I get back home I’d write a script and send it to Mattel.

I laughed to myself. Micah chuckled.

“Would you just stop?” I stood up, yelling.

“Stop what?”

I narrowed my eyes at him and crossed my arms in front of my chest. I had the best evil look. I could make my brother scared when he was annoying me, and anyone with a younger brother knows that takes skill.

“So what, now I’m not allowed to look am I?”

I kept staring.

“You know what sister? Two can play at this game. And honestly, I don’t get what your deal is. Do you just decide to hate every guy that comes across your path? What are you, a nun or something?”

Like I said, I had become immune to dumb boy syndrome.

He crossed his arms across his chest and stared back. After ten seconds (I was counting) he blinked and rolled his eyes.

“Fine you win.” He leaned back against a log and placed his arms behind his head. My stomach did a flip. Stupid stomach.

“Did you just call me ‘sister’?”

He rolled his eyes again. “I’m sorry for whatever I did that pissed you off so much. I didn’t know.”

“Know what?” I said, blinking.

“You know. That you hadn’t come out yet.”

I cocked my head to the side. “Come out of what?” I said slowly.

“You know, the closet. It all makes sense know. Why you don’t like me for no reason, why you hang close to your friend. Does she know? She’s not a lesbo. Or wait, is she? Because that’s going to make things really awkward.”

“You think I’m WHAT!?” this time I all out screamed. “EWW! Ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ewwwwww!” I yelled, jumping around the sand doing an “icky dance”. Just imagine finding a spider crawling on you and your reaction to it. That’s the icky dance.

In the middle of my freak out I heard Micah howling. I turned to look at him laying with his back on the sand, clutching his stomach, laughing.

“You think this is funny? Calling a girl lesbian is funny to you?”

He controlled his wheezing enough to sputter “Ok look. I know you’re straight. It’s so obvious. And I know you’re friend is too. Look, I just wanted to ease the tension. You’ve been so stiff and cold-shoulder all evening. You wouldn’t even look at me. What else was I supposed to do?”

“No, no, you’re right. I completely agree.” I sat down on a log across the fire from him.

“You do? You’re not pissed right now?” he asked, his face surprised yet hopeful.

“Nope, not at all. It’s okay, I completely understand your insecurity. It common for you to behave like this, given the situation.”

“Thank God you understand. Whew! I thought you were going to skin me alive the way you were starring daggers at me earlier.”
