She Taught Me. . .

Legolas found it hard to breathe. Why had she wept at her departure? It was not that large of a change.

Was it?

He was going to see her in a few weeks.

Am I not?

Legolas shook his head furiously, as if to clear his head of such preposterous thoughts. She had only left mere seconds ago. He could still see her riding off in the distance and he expected her to look back.

She didn't.

That is when he realized he was standing where he had a few seconds ago. Frozen. He had forgotten to breathe so he desperately gasped for air. Legolas remembered the letter she had pressed into his hand. And, quickly, he unfolded it.

        "My Legolas,
By the time you read this, I will be long gone. Even in writing, I cannot explain to you what is going on. In the simplest summary, all I can tell you is that the Eye is fixed on me because of a great power I posses. He does not wish to harm me, not yet. He does wont to harm you, because you are the person I love most on this world. Through you, he wishes to get to me and his strategy is well thought out because you mean the world too me.

At a time not too long ago, I was afraid of what our love would do to me and then I was afraid of would it would do to you. Now, I am afraid for your life.

I should have been afraid for my own life.

I will die in Minas Tirith. I will never see you again. In my last words, I plead with you.

Watch after my father after I am gone, I fear it will break his heart when I do. If Sam returns, tell him I was happy, even to my death bed. And please, oh please, love again.

Not just love for another lady but remember and charish the life of the stars. Find the beauty in everything, as you could so long ago. When I go imagine the life I would want for you.

Growing up, I was told only the warriors ascend to the stars after they die. The warriors and heroes. I hope to be up there, among the the men of Rohan.

I will watch for you.

I know it is selfish of me but my last reqest of you is to recover. Let me go. Life carries on after death, even after my death, that I fear will rip you apart.

I am trying to catch my breath, Legolas, for writing this pains me deeply.

See the rest of the world with Gimli, see the beauties of this infinite world. Remember me but do not cry. I watch from the stars.

Your lover, (she had crossed it out)

Your friend, (she had crossed that out as well)

Your acquaintance,
Lessien Tiwele"

Legolas barely noted the tear stains on the letter. He sprinted to the stables, mounting a horse, not his horse, but a horse all the same, and kicking it harshly in the side.

She and Gandalf were faster riders than him but neither of them were fueled by the strange energy in him. He could still catch them.

He got to the gate and called up, his voice, usually even, was panicked. "Open the gate!"

The guards glanced at him but made no move for the levers.

"Open the gate!"

"M'lord," a timid gate sentry began. "The Court Seer, Eve Elessar, ordered the gate stay closed to all until the sun reaches it's peak."

Legolas had his bow loaded in half a second, aiming it at the announcer. "I am Prince Legolas Thrandullion of Mirkwood. I command you open the gate!"

"Her order outranks yours here, s-sire, I mean, my lord." The sentry quivered in fear.

Legolas let his arrow go, missing the man's head by mere inches but knew it was no use. He dismounted, ignoring the crying man, grabbed a rope hanging from a hook near the gate, and went up top, where the sentries kept watch.

Aragorn and Merry spoke to one another, Merry also was watching with want in his eyes as the riders turned into black specks on the horizon.

Legolas shoved them aside and tied the rope so he could slide down. His mind was elsewhere as his body moved.

His motions were furious and fast. In a few seconds, he tied the rope around the stone and climbed over the wall. Legolas's feet were braced against the wall and his hands were gripping onto the harsh rope.

Aragorn called for him, "Legolas? What are you doing?"

He ignored Aragorn. He let his feet dangle and his hands cut open as he slid down the rope with ease. Then his feet hit solid, dusty ground and he ran in her direction.

It was pointless but he ran until he could not breathe and the dust in his lungs made him keel over and the dust in his eyes blinded him.

He fell to his knees.

She was gone.

How had he let her slip through his fingers so easily?

Lessien would watch from the stars but Legolas would not be able to see her.

"Legolas!" Aragorn called but he could not hear.
