When the Fellowship was about to leave Lothlórien Lady Galadriel gave Sam a little box of wood with earth inside. This eath came from Galadriel's orchard and it had the capability to make fertile any soil it was put on. With this earth Sam would help restoring Shire's gardens and vegetation after it was destroyed by Satuman and his men.
