o crown of thorns

O Crown of Thorns--
how dearly you yearn for a sweet lover's touch!
You guard your rose with all you have.
Year in, year out, it is you that keeps those Others away
with your sharp knives and glistening daggers.

O Crown of Thorns--
what are these tears upon your stem?
Let not the troubles of the world weary you,
and turn you gray with sadness.
Stand, and take a stand.

O Crown of Thorns--
how gloriously the sun rises!
You wish you could be of the ocean instead,
but you know that you have rooted deep in this earth.
Only it has rejected you.

O Crown of Thorns--
how you wish you could sing as the nightingale sings!
But that is not your domain, and you must stay,
and watch and keep watch over your rose,
and let the Others love its beauty.

O Crown of Thorns--
how dearly you yearn for just a glimpse of the sea.

But it is so far, far away.
