and onwardThough I want to take the time—
but it doesn't wait for us
never did wait for us
The moonlight waves me on
and your heartache and mine don't matter here
where darkness fell scores and scores of moons ago
while the moon was down and the world's eyes shut. There's not enough time for all of us
to sound the trumpets of glory and joy.
No time to listen, to understand all
the calls of gulls from o'er the sea. They offer wines and meats to Asclepius
as though all life was for nothing. Why let the night cloud your eyes, your sense?
Why let it overtake your heart? To mist and shadow the world must fall
but while the stars wheel overhead
we have no need to shed tears for they.Drink a parting glass with me
and sing a toast for those long gone.
Go to sleep and dream—but always wake
when morning breaks. They offer wines and meats to Asclepius
as though all life was for nothing.
