Maya's POV:

I woke up to the sound of yelling and something being dumped on my face

I gasp as I wake up with a start looking around to see that I was drenched in water

My eyes snap up to see Riley's bubbly face staring down at me while her brother, Auggie, held a now empty bucket that i presume was once filled with water

I groaned knowing the reason for this behavior

Usually Riley would be running for the hills if she were to do this on a regular day but she had no fear when it came to this specific holiday

Christmas

Well, it was Christmas Eve but the excitement never waited for Riley

She was always excited for Christmas Eve and ofcourse Christmas itself, and she usually attempted to get me excited every year but it never works

I hate to say it but it's true, I am the grinch to the Christmas holiday

There was nothing to it, not for me anyway

The holiday just never appealed to me

It's not because I hate joy, it's just you know a certain little blonde girl was promised by her dad that he would come back after buying her a present but instead never came back, only to have the little blonde girls dream and happiness of the holiday be ruined for the rest of her life

Oh Who am I kidding, my childhood has ruined such a beautiful holiday and I always ruin it for everyone else

But this year I promised Riley I would already pretend to be happy so that's what I'll do

I rose out of bed and saw Riley smiling at me "thank you for cooperating peaches......"

I fake a smile "anything for you honey...."

She leads Auggie out and leaves me to change

Once changing and doing my daily essentials I walk out into the living room to be greeted by Riley's parents

They loved Christmas just as much as Riley, and were gracious enough to let me sleepover for the meanwhile of Christmas break

My mom and Shawn would be coming sooner but for now it was just us

I turned to Topanga who greeted me with pancakes "eat up" she says and hand me the plate

I smile and sit down happily

I eat the pancakes as Riley drones on about the present she got for Lucas and how he'll love it

To me, I felt that everyone seemed to think that they got the perfect gift, but what exactly is the perfect gift?

What even makes people happy about getting gifts?

What if you hate the gift??

Do you just pretend that you like it?? Wouldn't that be considered rude??

Giving presents seems like something so extra

What happened to just telling someone how much you mean to them?
