We did in fact put the investigation on hold. Actually, it was on hold for quite a long time. I was feeling anxious but Con kept coaxing me into taking a longer break.
On one particular evening, Con and I were heading over to a very elegant cafe that we frequently go to. It's not like it was a date or anything - it wasn't a date.
Anyway, we were about a block away before Con pulls me back suddenly.
"Hey - doesn't that look like... "
"No Con." I say, rolling my eyes. I had told him the general description of what Kaz looked like and he started freaking about over every single person that matched what I'd said. This time however - I glance at the figure in front of us for a second and push my glasses down.
"Con-" I whisper, feeling my footsteps tense, "Ok... ok... this time you're right."
"We need to follow him." Con turns us around and we bump into a few people by accident. I feel guilty but we don't stop walking.
"Con - we can't walk this close to him you idiot! Slow down... "
Con sighs and we walk a few persons' length behind 'Kaz'.
After a few minutes, it seems like Kaz was walking faster and Con pulls my arm again - leading us into an alleyway.
"Is this where Kaz went..?" I say, walking into an empty clearing.
Con shushes me and starts searching around - I follow suit. Then out of nowhere - the 'Kaz' person we were following walks into the middle of the empty lot we're in.
"What do you want?" he says, swiping a hand through his hair and looking from me to Con.
Through some emotion of self - condemnation, Con glares at Kaz, runs over and-
Gets punched in the face.
"C-Con!" I run over and lean down beside him. He's knocked out cold.
Kaz looks at me and walks over cautiously, "Oh... shit, I didn't mean to hit him that hard." he cracks his knuckles, nonetheless.
I grit my teeth, "You've always been like this - Rice told me about you."
Kaz balls his hands into fists, and he seemed like he was gonna go on a rampage, "I could give the same treatment to you right here - it's not like no one would know. No one would care at all."
"Ding dong, you're fucking wrong."
He looks away, frustrated, but he doesn't walk a step closer. "What do you want? Why were you following me?"
"We just wanted to talk to you." I mutter, looking at Con again.
"About what? I don't care what you have to say or what you want to do. I want you," he put emphasis on the next few words, "To leave me the hell alone." He starts walking away and I get up.
"Listen to me." I practically growl at him. He stops and stands in his place with his head low. "You want to help Rice, right? You know how she felt, right? I know she was special to you Kaz - why would you hurt her? You loved her didn't you?
"What do you know?" he yells, turning around and looking at me with a fire in his eyes, "You don't know - anything. You don't know... what we were."
"You're right. I don't know - and neither do you." I step back and look at Con. He still lays unconscious and I bite my lip. "You don't know how Rice felt - you kept pushing yourself onto her yet - she didn't want you. She didn't want anything to do with you."
