The trial had been stressful to say the least. Connie had stood up and spoken. She had relived the accident in her mind up on the stand, in front of everyone, trying her utmost to convince the jury that Steph Sims deserved to be locked away. So, when the judge had pronounced the word "guilty" Connie felt as though a heavy weight had been lifted from her shoulders. Finally. Finally, justice had been served. All the worrying she had been doing could stop now. That was it, it was over. Finished.

She turned to her daughter who seemed to mirror her feelings and gave her a tight hug. The relief she felt after hearing that one word was overwhelming. So much so that she couldn't hold back the tears. For once she didn't try to hold back, she let her tears fall. These weren't tears of sadness but of happiness. Knowing how far they had come, everything that they had been put through, just everything, it was all over. They could finally put it all behind them and move forward.

She stroked Grace's hair before pulling back and looking at her through teary eyes.

"We won baby, it's all over," she whispered, her voice shaky from crying.

The fact that Steph had finally been sent to prison came as a relief to Grace, of course it did, she had nearly killed her. But the fact that her mum was so happy and was smiling for the first time in a week had made her day.

Jacob had kept his distance from Connie throughout the trial. He had entered the room after making sure that she had taken her seat and was facing the other way. He had made sure he was sitting by the door so that he could leave before being seen.

As he had taken his seat, a man sitting in the back row to his left had caught his eye. He knew he recognised him from somewhere but couldn't quite put his finger on it. It took him a while and multiple glances but it finally came to him.

Is that Steph's ex-husband? He thought to himself. It seemed normal for someone who didn't know them, that her husband should attend her trial but he had seen the way Steph acted around him. She couldn't stand him. He couldn't stand her for that matter. They hated each other didn't they? Why would he be at her trial?

He found it quite strange but didn't think anymore of it. He must have just been there to watch her be sentenced to prison, like the rest of them were.

Thankfully, he hadn't been asked to speak in court. It seemed they had all the evidence that they needed. And besides, Connie had done so well. It had broke his heart a little when it had been her turn to speak. Knowing how hard it must have been for her, reliving all those painful memories. God knows it was hard enough for him, and he was only sitting in the stands.

He was overcome with happiness when the judge had sentenced Steph to years in prison. He was so proud of Connie and so relieved for her and Grace. He looked down at Connie and Grace and seeing them so happy warmed his heart. They really did deserve happiness after everything they had been through. He couldn't think of anyone more deserving of it.

Steph handn't even tried to argue. She knew that she was going away for what she had done but that didn't mean she wasn't still full of hatred for Connie. As far as she was concerned, Connie had ruined her life.

Jacob noticed the little stare she had thrown in Connie's direction after having been found guilty but what she did next caught his full attention.

She looked up to her ex-husband that she apparently hated enough to keep his daughter from him for so long, and she gave him a look, followed by a sly smile which Jacob found slightly puzzling. He turned discretely towards her ex-husband to watch for his reaction and noticed him nod his head slightly and wink back at her.

Jacob looked ahead, wondering what had just gone on between the pair. It seemed as though they had just made some sort of private agreement. He couldn't be sure though. But one thing he did know for sure was that they weren't the actions of a divorced couple that couldn't even bear to be in the same room as each other.

As Steph was taken away by two officers, Connie turned to look at her and she happened to be staring right back at her. Without saying anything, Connie simply raised her head a little, showing Steph that the best woman had won.

She savoured the moment, knowing that that would be the last time she ever saw Steph and that she would always remember that last look of superiority that Connie had given her.

She turned her attention back to Grace as she helped her to stand up and walk back over to her wheelchair, closely followed by Sam.

Jacob saw the three of them getting up and decided it was time he left. He turned to leave and noticed that Steph's ex-husband had already disapeared. There was definitely something odd about the two of them, but he would forget about it for the rest of the day at least.

Connie had Grace had won and he would celebrate their victory, even if 'celebrating' meant going back to his own house alone and opening a couple of beers.

He decided Connie had everything she needed and that there was no need for him to hang around any longer.
