I sit watching as people walk on the sidewalk ten stories below me. The moon is out and the glow of the city hides the stars in the sky. A slight breeze keeps it from getting too humid. It's beautiful up where I am, I feel free. My phone is on and playing music, making everything just that much calmer. Every so often there's a helicopter or a plane that flies overhead to land at the airport across town.
My phone buzzes, temporarily stopping my music. I pick up my phone seeing I have a text message. It's from Jon, he's been my best friend since birth pretty much. We do everything together. I live with him in a small two bedroom apartment on the edge of town.
J: u @ our spot?
Jon and I found this spot in our mid-teens. There's a fire escape that climbs up the wall of the building and we use it to get to the roof. We usually come up here when life gets stressful and we need a break from the world. Once we're up here we just sit and watch the people go about their days, turning off our notifications on our phones to make sure we ignore our lives and enjoy the moment.
Sometimes we bring snacks and a blanket up here and stay for hours in end. His other friends don't seem to like it when he comes up here. They always say that it's distracting him from his job, but Jon tells me not to worry about what they say. I text him back telling him I am and to bring a couple blankets and snacks. I hear someone behind me and I turn to see Jon climbing up onto the roof, his phone glowing in his hand.
"So I'm guessing you didn't bring anything?" I ask and he laughs, showing off his fat backpack. I smile and get up from the edge and take the bag.
"I figured I'd bring some stuff because you weren't at home." He says. I pull the softest blanket out of the backpack and lay it out for us. I find a second blanket and set it down on the first blanket.
Jon sits with me as I sit down, looking at what he brought for food. A couple tubes of Pringles, a tray of fruit, fruit snacks, chocolate Kisses, Sour Patch Kids, and a couple sodas. I take the tray of fruit out first and pop off the lid.
Jon scoots over next to me and takes some grapes for himself, popping them into his mouth. I take some of the raspberries and eat them. "Anything you want to talk about?" I ask, leaning back on my one hand and setting the fruit tray down. Jon sighs, tracing the designs with his finger on the blanket.
"YouTube has been a real pain in my ass lately and it's stressing me out." He lays down next to me, getting comfortable with the second blanket stuffed under his head. "Sometimes it lets me upload new videos but other times it's like it hates me and corrupts all the footage that I want to upload. I think I might just take a break from it for a couple days, let it get its shit together."
"Won't the guys be mad at you?" I ask, he shakes his head no.
"No, they'd understand." He answers and I nod, sighing. "Why did you decide to come up here?"
"I was feeling stressed as well. My boss was being an ass today and giving me all this work that other people could do. I was super busy already and he decided to just fuck me over." I shake my head. "I honestly hate my job so much but I'm scared that if I quit, I won't be able to find another job that pays me as well as this one does."
"You could always become a YouTuber." Jon comments and I laugh at him, laying down next to him and resting my head on the blanket as well.
"Yeah, no thanks. I'd rather not have to deal with YouTube on a bad day."
"I guess you're right." He sighs and we lay there in silence, listening to the sounds of the city and eating fruit.
Soon, I fall asleep. I roll onto my side and curl into Jon, making him wrap his arm around my shoulders and I rest my arm across his waist. His body heat keeping me warm as it begins to cool down outside.
