I'm drawn from my bed by a mouthwatering aroma, stretching happily as I watch the sun peak over the horizon. I dress quickly in something moderately concealing, a long-sleeved grey shirt and matching night pants. While I'm not embarrassed by my scars I've learned it's best not to draw attention to them, especially if you don't wish to share where they came from. I check my appearance in the bathroom mirror, making sure the thick black choker affixed to my throat is still properly in place, before grabbing my notebook and bracing myself for the day.
I slowly open my door and peer cautiously around the hall, finding it thankfully empty, before quietly making my way down to the foyer. Everything is silent until I step into the dining room where the sound of something sizzling in a pan greets me. I hurry over to the kitchen, expecting to find my father within, and freeze like a deer in headlights as I spot Damien and the bespectacled demon my father had warmly greeted yesterday. Both are facing away and I take a small step back in hopes of sneaking away unseen but Damien straightens quickly, turning sharply to face me and looking just as startled as I.
"Good morning!" He greets cheerfully which draws his brothers attention as well. He turns, briskly looking me over as I grip my notepad tightly against my legs, before smiling gently.
"You must be Miss Anderson, it's a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance." His tone is delicate and he makes no move to step forward, casting a questioning glance to Damien. I step just close enough for him to read the words I quickly jot on the paper as I hold my notebook out to him.
'It's nice to meet you..?'
"James, Miss."
"William had to run into town so we offered to make breakfast." Damien explains at my unheard question. "It should be done shortly if you'd like to take a seat."
'Do you need any help?' I ask, seeing as they are guest in my home, and Damien begins to reply when he's rudely cut off.
"The fuck are you?" A voice snaps from behind me and I spin around to find a gruff looking demon standing mere inches away in a ripped up green tank top and matching cargo pants, silver dogs tags gleaming around his neck, with tousled auburn hair and eyes sharp as emeralds boring into me. Damiens hands on my shoulders stop me as I back into him, his skin grazing along my neck sending peculiar waves of tingling heat across my skin as I shiver.
"Sam!" James snaps and the demons glance shifts to his brother, his face twisting into a scowl.
"What?" He growls back.
"Honestly, were you listening at all yesterday? This is Williams daughter." Damien sighs wearily.
"Course I was!" Sam replies defensively as he rubs the back of his neck, looking me over once more as I remain terror-struck. "Sure she ain't his granddaughter?"
"Yes Sam, I'm sure."
"Well are you gonna say somethin' or just stand there?" He asks as he steps further into the kitchen, no longer blocking my escape.
"Wait!" Damien exclaims before I've even begun moving but I pull myself from his grip regardless, sprinting into the foyer where I topple into another of our guests.
"Hey!" He yelps in surprise, barely righting us as he stumbles back. He stares at me in surprise, his cerulean eyes like a bottomless ocean on a bright day, before clearing his throat and smiling brightly.
"Are you..?" He starts but I don't let him finish as I push past him and rush up the stairs, slamming the room door behind me.
I grip my chest as I wait for my rapidly beating heart to calm, leaning against the door as I breathe in deeply, and can't help feeling mildly betrayed that my father would leave me alone with them before reminding myself they aren't dangerous, at least not in his eyes.
