Chapter 2: Slipping Through My Fingers

The last day of school was a sad one. Most of the Seniors graduating spent the entire day saying their goodbyes to each other, underclassmen, and their teachers. Me, I said goodbye to my friends in the underclass and my favorite teachers. I only had like 2 favorite teachers so that was easy. Afterwards, I met my friends for lunch. We talked about future plans, dreams, that stuff. To be honest, I don't know what I want to do with my life. I kind of want to get out into the world and explore new things before I settle down into a specific life as a ruler or something like that. Soon, the school day is over and I go home to the castle. When I get home, I head straight to my bedroom and take a nice, long nap. (Like usual.)

I wake up around 5:25ish. Naps are a teens best friend. I feel so revived. I get up and futz with my hair because I have a serious case of bed head. After 5 minutes of that, I finally have my hair in a style I can deal with. I walk to my wardrobe and open the closet part of it. I grab  my graduation robes and put them to the side. Should I change my outfit? Should I not? Hmmmm.........

"Change it." I say.

After several minutes of browsing my inventory, I decide on my favorite light green dress shirt, my light grey slim fit jeans, and a grey vest. I put on the same boots from this morning. I look in the mirror to look see how I look. Hmm.... My hair sucks right now. (OMG!!! Stop going nuts with your hair dude! It is fine.) I go to the bathroom I spray some hairspray. Good thing for hairspray. For some reason, every time I think the word hairspray, I think of the musical. (Sad. I know.) It is a good musical.

I go to the chair and grab my robe. I put it on to make sure it fits. To be honest, I absolutely hate the color. It's like a darkish teal. Bleh. I unzip it and fold it up carefully. I hang it over my right arm.

"Come on Eevee." I say.

"Ok..." She says sleepily.

She jumps onto my shoulder and lay down. To me, it is cute how she does it. Everything Eevee does is cute. She is the one thing that will always make me smile no matter how dark the moment is. She is... a true friend.

I walk downstairs to the library. I close the doors behind me and set down in front of the piano. Eevee jumps off my shoulder and sits on the piano.

"What are you doing?" Eevee asks.

Eevee looks at me and smiles.

"I know the exact song." Eevee says happily.

"I love your thinking Eevee." I say devilishly.

"Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile
I watch her go with a surge of that well-known sadness
And I have to sit down for a while.

The feeling that I'm losing her forever
And without really entering her world
I'm glad whenever I can share her laughter
That funny little girl.

Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
The feeling in it
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see what's in her mind
Each time I think I'm close to knowing
She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time.

Sleep in our eyes, her and me at the breakfast table
Barely awake, I let precious time go by
Then when she's gone, there's that odd melancholy feeling
And a sense of guilt I can't deny.

What happened to the wonderful adventures
The places I had planned for us to go
(Slipping through my fingers all the time)
Well, some of that we did but most we didn't
And why, I just don't know.

Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
The feeling in it
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see what's in her mind
Each time I think I'm close to knowing
She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time.

Sometimes I wish that I could freeze the picture
And save it from the funny tricks of time
Slipping through my fingers
Slipping through my fingers all the time

Schoolbag in hand she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile."

After done playing, I just sit there. Eevee stairs back at me and then we both say the same thing.

"Perfect."

"That was beautiful honey."

I turn my head and see my parents in the doorway.

"You haven't played for us in a long time... Or at least outside of a school concert." Dad says.

"Yeah... Sorry about that. I meant to but... You know time just slipped by." I say.

My parents come over to the piano. My mom takes a seat next to me on the bench.

"What was that song for?" She asks curiously.

"Well... It is the song I am performing at the ceremony." I reply.

"Son. That will be the perfect." My dad says.

I sigh. "I know."

I start to tear up a little. My mom puts her around my shoulder and hugs me.

"Don't worry honey. Your life is about to start a new. School is just a faze in life." She says reassuring.

"I know. But it just seems like I don't know what to do next with my life. After graduation, school, my friends, they will all be... gone." I say starting to cry.

"Son. You will always have your friends and school, you can always visit them. These things will never fall out of your life. You'll just build on those memories and remember them always." He says sweetly.

"Anyway, you know what they say. You always remember your first." I interrupt her.

"MOM!!! Way to make this weird!" I say starting to laugh.

I stand up and walk out to the balcony. My parents follow me and stand in the door way. Eevee trots behind us. I lean on the balcony and look out and take in the view. The wind is blowing slightly. I sigh and then chuckle. I don't look back or even open my eyes.

"You both are right."

That catches them off guard. But then they understand. They don't reply, they just nod. I open my eyes and breath in. I turn around and look at them.

I say with a quick chuckle, "Well... I guess it's graduation time."
