And if it does, he'll hate you. Why would you doom him to live like he is? He's unrecognizable.
"Anne, you ready?"
I look up from Robert's dead body, which has been laid out on a table, looking like it's about to break, in Randy's hideout. My eyes meet Juliette's and I nod.
"Ready."
"Then stand back," Randy says.
No matter how powerful he is, he isn't immune to a bullet to the head, which is how we're making sure he doesn't do something he isn't supposed to.
Why he keeps a gun in his building is a mystery. It's not like he needs it.
I take a few steps back, and then I feel someone grab my hand. When I turn, it's Robert's mom.
She stays silent, but she gives me a sad smile, then turns back to watch her son.
Randy tries. He really does. Unfortunately, Robert stays lifeless.
"Again," commands Juliette, pressing the gun closer to his head.
Randy sighs, puts his hands above Robert's heart, and shocks him again. It doesn't work.
"Again," says Edward, with his arms crossed. Randy tries again.
It doesn't work.
They all turn to me and Ms. Gordon, expecting us to ask for another try. As I open my mouth to speak, Ms. Gordon squeezes my hand. "No more."
Everyone's face is filled with surprise.
She explains herself by saying, "This isn't my son anymore. He's dead. What situation would he be in if he did come back? Maybe he would be in pain, or shame.... We just can't." Her last sentence sounds defeated and heartbroken.
Edward looks at me, and I just nod in agreement with a sigh.
Velocity sighs, too. Everyone is quiet as Juliette dials 911, and we all wait for the cops to show up.
