LEFT BEHIND LIFE
❀Derek's knuckles whitened as his hands gripped around the steering wheel, his foot pressed hard into the gas pedal. Releasing it every few minutes as the highway patrol passed by, the music was playing a soft jazz but he was no where focused on its tune.
The thought of seeing Meredith again gave the mute butterflies their voice back, hitting against the inside of his stomach at the thought of seeing her.
This is crazy, he thought.
And it was, here he was, a grown man, husband, a surgeon, he had all a person could ever want. He had everything he did want, but it all didn't matter if he couldn't be with Meredith, if he couldn't be happy. There was only twenty more minutes to Seattle Grace, only one thousand-two-hundred seconds until he'd be graced with her breathtaking features.
In the passenger seat his phone endlessly vibrated with missed calls from work, and from his wife, he easily dismissed them the passed day and a half he'd been driving. There were energy drinks littering his car, but it didn't matter if he was tired, the thought of seeing her kept him awake with love.
The last words he'd said to her before leaving completely.
It was all real.
He cursed himself that he didn't leave her with a kiss, one that he could've savored because he couldn't pin point the last time they did and he ached for one.
A lot could change over a year, what if she had a boy friend? What if she'd moved on? The what ifs hit him like a train as he slowed his driving.
The thought of her with another man set of a burning fire in his chest, he'd had to go through her with the vet-Finn, he didn't know if he could live through that kind of jealously again.
But she was worth it to him, anything for Meredith.
There were so many nights when he was home alone in New York, his stupid flip phone that he'd never part ways with in his hands, her number just below his fingers, the call button a millimeter away. But he'd always found an excuse not to call, he'd made the decision to leave, he'd left her, left their relationship, but the love still lingered.
His heart sped up in its already fast face when he pulled up to the hospitals parking lot, taking one right in the front, the one right by the doors to enter.
Derek's blue eyes shone in the sun rise, the sun hardly making an appearance and looking like a fire ball, enough to have the light noticeably in his eyes but not enough to bother him, maybe it was a sign when the he sat back and turned the radio up.
A familiar Elvis Presley song came on, one that Derek had related to his relationship with Meredith. One he smiled at, like he was doing now, folding his hands over each other trying to think of the perfect words.
Wise Men say...
He closed his eyes at the soft words.
Only fools rush in...
Derek finally had it, he was going to tell Meredith everything he felt, how sorry he was, and how much he loved and missed her the passed year.
But I...
He couldn't believe his eyes when he saw her walking on the concrete, holding something he couldn't see because it was on a blind spot to him.
Can't help...
She stopped in front of the doors, meeting a man, one Derek hadn't ever seen before. His eyebrows furrowed together, she was speaking with him and smiling that wide one she had. His heart stopped when he saw a baby's carriage in her hands, a happy child sleeping in it as Meredith held it firmly in her grasp.
Falling in Love...
His worst fear had come true, she'd moved on he thought, everything felt slow, the way his eyelids blinked, his heartbeat, the rise and fall of his chest, he could've sworn he heard his own heart shattering into a million pieces.
With you.
