Derek felt immense happiness at the first touch of his son and the warm feeling he brought to his heart. Like a piece was missing from him and this was it, and the other half was being mended as he tried to repair things with Meredith.
"I think he likes you." Meredith smiled, getting the same feeling in her chest that Derek had.
Although it was the next day, they discussed what happened and haven't decided anything yet. But they both knew Derek wanted to be apart of Bailey and Meredith's lives once more, even if it meant he just stay friends with Meredith. He didn't know yet.
"Of course he loves me, who doesn't?" Derek retorted with a playful grin.
"Can't argue on that." She replied.
A knock came to the door, Meredith went to get it but Derek had already walked up to it an answered. She looked around him and saw her friend Augustus standing in the doorway, glasses perched on his nose, and files in his hands.
The two had been trying to crack a case about a girl with a tumor lodged between all her internal organs, and if they figured it out it would score them points with the residents and with the chief. Saying they wanted to crack it was an understatement, they needed to crack it.
"Oh Augustus come in, I totally forgot about this...it's okay though, come sit with me on the couch." She invited him in sensing his awkwardness.
The man slowly shuffled into the room, passing Derek with a hello before sitting a little too close to Meredith for Derek's liking, but he remained quiet.
They began opening the files and looking back to everything they'd already gone over, repeating what they'd forgotten and getting into a discussion with each other of ways they could possibly save the girl.
Derek took a seat with his baby on the chair wth large armrests, letting his muscles lay on the soft cushion as he watched the two work.
"This one right here!" Augustus reached for a paper in Meredith's zone, their hands reaching for it at the same time they touched.
"This is it?" She replied happily at the document.
"This is it!" The man exclaimed as he stood up happily with Meredith.
Augustus in the heat of the moment picked her up by the waist and spun her around in a circle, small squeals of joy coming from her mouth, baby Bailey making loud noises in the background as he made grabby hands at the other man in the room.
It didn't take Derek long to realize that Bailey didn't want to be with him, he wanted Augustus.
"We have to go tell the chief." Augustus had a slight British accent, it was one of the most appealing things about him.
"We do. We do, Derek will you watch Bailey?" Meredith pleaded as she scrambled to get the files in order.
"Uh, sure." He nodded.
"Let's go." Augustus grabbed her by the hand and they were out the door.
Leaving Derek in an empty house with Bailey, he had to blink several times to figure out what had just happened. He wondered if he even still had a chance with Meredith. This new guy seemed pretty close with her.
What he didn't know was that to Meredith, Augustus was no more than a friend.
